Quote:
To encourage childbirth, the Health, Welfare and Family Affairs Ministry has announced six slogans.
The six are: If every household has two or three children, Koreas future will grow brighter; The greatest present for your child is siblings; Childbirth is touching, childcare is rewarding, and families are happy; The more you have, the more hopeful you will be, the more grown your children are, the happier you will be; The joy of childbirth, growing happiness, younger Korea; and Two children mean happiness; three children mean hope.

The ministry will run ads with the slogans inside subway trains and at platforms of lines one through seven until January next year. Next month, it will put the ads in newspapers to promote the slogans.

We came up with the catchphrases to encourage childbirth since many Koreans still remember old catchphrases designed to curb population growth, a ministry official said.

Well, there's a lot to discuss on this issue, but to help "God & Country" I see a way to make some won on this issue in the short term. All I need is a slogan.
Which ad slogan sounds best:
1) Have sperm; will travel
2) Don't leave it up to chance; Call me and take a chance
3) Uncle Park wants YOU: to make babies with ME

My wife and I read one of these phrases on the subway. It said, "One is lonely."

My wife laughed, because she remembers the gov't telling people that
"One is enough" over 30 years ago, when Korea was worried about overpopulation.

She also commented how disgusting it is that she can't get any money from the gov't to help raise a baby (or very, very little) if she's working. Many couples need 2 incomes to survive these days, so too few people can benefit from gov't help and incentives to have more kids.

Yes it is disgusting that we don't get hand outs from the government. But whatever, I think Korea has enough people. The ads they have at the subways of old people sitting in the regular seats and the kids sitting on the special seats doesn't seem like a bad thing if I'm old.

The government is just freaking out because their population is retracting. THey don't want the same problem that Japan is about to have because that means *gasp* they might need immigration!!!!

Fat chance that Koreans will have more kids. As women become more emancipated that is the last thing they will want to do. If they ever get around to it, it will be 1 or MAYBE 2. Raising kids here is just way too damn expensive and stressful and it is only going to get worse.

The K government is fighting a losing battle and they know it.

Let's welcome Korea to the ranks of a first world nation. This is what happens when Gucci bags, BMW's and a Rolex are within reach. Children? Why? I Like the silver convertable with 330 horses!!

Let's not forget the mirror manufacturers in the kingdom. They can set almost any price and those babies will fly off the shelves!! Korea should have instated a mandatory prophyaxsis program 30 years ago. Can they build any higher? The Hermit Kingdom? The Stairwell Kingdom?

Side note - Does the Korean government really want to increase the number of children in the future who will fall victum to an inevitable sky high divorce rate. I never thought I would come to this conclusion, but I believe infidelity is actually an accepted practice. I guess it's how two married individuals define a marriage. I still don't see a skyrocketing divorce rate helping future generations in wanted to procreate.

The problem is, pretty soon most of them will be retired, and they will need working adults to support them.

Its already a mission to find a vacant seat on the subway without having to give it up for a helmonie standing over you. The old folks have already overflowed their allotted seating area.

Retired? Plenty of open spaces on the sidewalk to sell garlic cloves and lettuce leaves.

Meh. I remember I got a talk in college back in Canada about how all us single women need to get married and start having more babies too.

Mind you, he didn't say it in those exact words, but he implied it nonetheless.

Anyway, I agentX, I'd have to go with number 3. Surprised You can print it on t-shirts.

Canada will be fine. We have one of the lowest birth rates but when we accept 300k immigrants a year, that will work in Tim Horton's for peanuts, there won't be a problem.

I don't see South Korea adopting a similar style policy at anytime. Many Koreans I know already think there are "too many" foreigners in their country. I guess that measly drop in the bucket that we represent is too much.

Increased post natal and day care are not government handouts if they government is trying to encourage more kids. It in fact allows people to be more proactive and less risk-averse if they know there is a social support network there for them. Also it avoids single mothers and their kids being condemned to be an underclass.

I've also heard that sentiment from Koreans.
1% foreigners, and they think they're being overrrun.

I wonder how long it will be before govt starts to promote the concept of foreign immigration. TV ads and such.It will reach a point where they have to soon.

Based on anti-immigration viewpoints of the majority in Western Europe, where the immigrant populations top out at around 5%, I'd say Koreans won't be too receptive to massive immigration. Can't see most country's citizenry reacting too well to a flood of immigration approaching 25% or more of the population. Of course there are exceptions like Canada and the US, but even there, there is a lot of anti-immigration attitudes just under the surface.

I can see an anti-immigration party getting a lot of votes in Canada, if they dropped their sudo-racist policies. Something like advocating a ban to all immigration for a few year, for those that are not in the country, and not targeting recent immigrants already living in the country. I find many immigrants to be pretty anti-immigration, as long as they aren't the target of it.

I for one hopes Korea can resolve the low-birth issue rate without immigration.
