Not to excuse what happened, but the marriage wasn't denied per se, this particular person said he wouldn't sign the license/perform the ceremony due his personal beliefs on interracial marriage. My understanding is that he did refer them to another justice of the peace who would (did?).
I think it's bizarre, but suppose it's not far different from someone refusing to marry a couple in a church if one or both have been previously divorced or aren't members of the parish or whatnot. |

It is far different from that. The cretin in question has an obligation to perform his duties as a government official. The couple in this case have met the legal reequirements and that's all that should come into question for the CIQ. |

The guy says he's not racist, he's just worried about the children.
Right. Their poor kids could grow up to be president someday. *

The problem, here, isn't whether the public servant is a bigot, or if interracial marriage is amoral, but a matter of the servant's rights.
He has a right to refuse service for whatever reason. He cannot be forced to carry out a function that he finds reprehensible for whatever reason. The state does not have that power.
He responded appropriately by referring the couple to a servant who could assist them. |

I am going to call B.S. on that one.
He is a public SERVANT, which means, he serves the public, NOT his own interest.
He has a job to perform, and if he doesn't like he, he should quit his job and let someone else do it.

Thats bogus. Thats the kind of argument that allows pharmacists to think that they can deny women the 'Plan B' pill or you could take it even further if you wanted. Lets say a police officer who is a 'public servant' decides to 'refuse service' and wont respond to a 911 call due to the fact that the person is black, white, gay, straight, male, female, or whatever?
If he were a pastor at a church and wanted to refuse to marry a couple in his church that would be one thing, but he is a representative of the state. Sure this time these people had other options but what if he was the only option? |

This is clearly not the case when it comes to a public servant peforming the duties of his office.

Actually, he does not have such a right. He can only deny service for specific causes cited by law, such as someone is not eligible under the law for said service.

Yes, he can. And the state does have that power.

No, he illegally denied them a government service. He should be impeached and removed from office. The Supreme Court was quite clear that a government does not have the authority to deny marriage based on race.
Captain Corea: In Louisiana, a Justice of the Peace is one level of the judiciary, presiding over a Justice of the Peace Court. There are two methods of becoming a JP: Election by the population in one's district (which is composed of at least one parish {equivalent of a county}) or appointed to serve the remainder of a term. Appointees are not eligible to run for re-election. |

Within the last two years, I've heard this inane comment in the Bible Belt: "The robin doesn't mate with the bluejay." Care to guess what it means? |

The guy's an idiot. First, you don't have to have to be married to have children, so that part isn't even a valid excuse.
And what happens if someone who is biracial wants to get married? Do they have to find someone else who is biracial?
Stupid people find stupid excuses to support their beliefs.
Like the bird comment, people actually say that like it's written in stone. They try to use God in the argument. True, two different kinds of birds can't mate, but two different colors of the same type of bird sure can. They conveniently forget that part.
I can't believe there are so many people this day and age in America. |

I think it means the same thing a former co-worker in Nashville once said: "God didn't put us here to make chocolate/vanilla swirl." |
