I have 5 weeks winter vacation and I'm trying to decide where to go. The only thing for sure now is that it's going to be somewhere that speaks Chinese (Mandarin) so I can not lose what I've learned. I'm already forgotten so much, it's been 5 years since I've really used it/studied it. It's still low conversational. I can do alright if I'm forced to only speak Chinese, but I've noticed here sometimes when I have random conversations with people in Chinese that I forget easy words that only come back to me 5 minutes later, and I'll tend to switch back and forth between Chinese and Korean because Korean words will come to me faster.
I have friends in Beijing and Shanghai, but I was also thinking of Yunan province etc. Who's been around a lot of China who can suggest something? I don't know if I go too far from Beijing if Chinese will be unintelligible to me due to different dialects or not, and I've only ever been to Beijing (which I really liked), so I'd appreciate suggestions of places that were great to see.
I'd also like to get to Hong Kong in the last week because of a swing dance festival there, and I have friends in Taiwan too, but I figure that it's impossible to go everywhere in one trip.
I know Beijing will be cold, so that's not ideal, I guess, but also not the end of the world. The trip will be mid Dec to end of Jan. Any suggestions or advice? |

Why not fly to Shanghai, go south & look at Hangzhou / Ningbo / Putuoshan, then get the train from S'hai to Suzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Kunming. Then the bus to from Dali/ Lijiang & back to Kunming, then to Guilin / Yangshuo / Wuzhou, & fly out of Hong Kong? |

Beencanman, this might be a stupid question, but where ARE the China off topic forums? I can only find the China job forums and it says that they'll delete any non-job related posts.
Does anyone have any idea about how different from putonghua the Chinese will be in different areas? Will I be able to understand the dialects in Kunming, say, or will it be too different from putonghua? |

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, you need to be logged in to see the off topic China forum. You might need to register first then. |
