I've got a serious case of it.
Here's what happened so far in the year and some change that I've been in Korea.
My first month here, a bus passed me on my left while I was riding my little 100 cc citi and almost ran me off the road. I sped after him as fast as I could, got off my bike, walked up to his window and slamed my fist into the side of the bus and said f..you.
Everyone in the bus looked at me in horror as I stood by the side of the rode screaming at the guy "bring it on." He thought about it for a second but saw the crazed look in my eye and decided to continue on. I'm lucky he did cause had he stepped off that bus I would have beat him to a pulp and I'd be in jail right now.
The next incident happened a couple months later when an SUV nearly ran me over so he could pass me in order to gain 10 meters of territory (there was a lot of traffic and I was moving at the same speed as every-one else).
I sped up to the side of his window and told him to f...off.
Every time a car passes too close, I either flip them off or try and do some type of damage to their car.
One car that almost ran me over in traffic, I sped up and smashed his side mirror with my elbow, then hastily disappeared into traffic.
The most recent event was last week when these two girls ran a red light at 50mph because they were talking on their cell phones and almost ended me.
I went after them, had them pull over and cursed at them for about five minutes.
I don't get angry easily, but I consider somone using their vehicle carelessly as a direct threat on my life.
The closest to death was those girls talking on their cell phones. Luckily it was in the country so I had a larger peripheral view of the area and could see that they weren't slowing down otherwise I'd be typing this from the grave.
I'm starting to reevaluate if it's worth it. I've been in many motorcycle accidents in my time but I've never seen such utter disregard for motorcyclists as I have in Korea. |

You're out of your mind if you drive a motorcycle in this country.

to be fair i get road rage a lot, im also a bit of a windmirror kicker when i have my moments. i ride a big bike in downtown seoul everyday. the dirvers here are basically idiots. but what i say is. thats the way it is with most car drivers. back home (the uk) i actually think its worse for bikers. i rode for 8 years back home in and aorund london so the traffic is similar. the cars there dont respect you an ounce. they will block you off on purpose from cutting through traffic. drive at you. the police are out to nab you for any number of small things. there are also a lot less bikes and thus car drivers never look for a bike. the classic line of "i didnt see you mate" - translating to, "i didnt look". personally as far as city riding goes. i much prefer it here. truthfully, how many times do you jump a red light when there is nothing (think a pedestrian crossing not a busy junction) or do an illegal u turn, park wherever you like.
there's plenty of idiots acting against bikers in every coutnry from my experience of riding in about 20 countries on all manner of bikes. people just dont see. you. if you take some advacned training (unlikely its even possible in this country) then you learn about how to position yourself and drive so these vehicles cant put you in that positon. in this country, i never go inside a taxi or a bus. the drivers are either drunk, untrained or just plain retarded. but, in truth, i kinda agree with the above poster. this is korea, its the way it is. there not good drivers (look at the statistics). suck it up. or take the bus. |

You need to visit Montreal. You'll have nearly as much chance of getting killed by motorists. Drivers here jump lanes without signaling.
Regarding Korea, I recon the rule is "every man for himself" on the roads here.
BTW, it might not be a good idea to encourage a Korean to fight with you because;
1) all Korean men do at least 2 years military training. Don't let their small stature fool you. Many of them can kick ass.
2) with the police, it will be your word against his and guess with one holds a lot more weight? |

Hyuk. Ever see a Korean fight on the street or in the bar? Some of the funniest, most inept "fighting" I've ever seen.
Not that there aren't those who really know how to fight, they just also know how to not get into them to begin with. |

I ride a 100cc citi and have witnessed driving behaviour that is both completely retarded, dangerous and uneccessary.
I won't even describe it as it's just too bloody much.
How some of these people got liscences I'll never know, they drive like 5 year old kids.
And what''s up with this? -
Light is red. Three cars are stopped at the obvious and visible red light. Lots of traffic is going crossways so it would be impossible to advance anyway.
4th driver pulls up behind the first 3 and starts beeping his horn like crazy
WTF?????
What is the point??!!!

To be fair, everyone except bike riders hate bike riders on the road. |

I hate when drivers honk incessantly at a car in the right lane to move into the crosswalk so they can make red light right turns. |

They park anywhere and everywhere. Including right on the corner at intersections such that you can't see what's coming, and there's no stop sign there to begin with, so who knows whether it's your right of way or not even if there is something coming you've likely already pulled out in front of in order to be able to see. Not to mention the right lanes being constantly blocked and thus most people driving in them end up cutting off people driving in the next lane so they can get by.
It's also nigh impossible to not tailgate on the highway when it's busy, because if you leave enough space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you some bloody Sorrento or Equus will jam themselves in there forcing you to slow down again to not be tailgating them to repeat the entire process from the beginning.
Don't get me started on the moron SUV drivers weaving through 110kph traffic with their toddler bouncing around, unrestrained in the back seat. Or the rural scooter drivers with their near-infant standing between their legs on their scooter on the way to school/work/whatever.
50 kids waiting to cross the crosswalk? Doesn't matter! I'm driving a Bongo!
This motorcyclist won't mind if I pull around him to the left because he's taking too long to cut a left turn into traffic at an intersection with no lights or stop signs to tell anyone how to drive through it in the first place!!
Rural highway driving formula:
If (traffic camera = yes) then (speed = limit - 20) else (speed = limit + 40)
I would go on but this thread is making my eyelid twitch. |

Well you have more experience than me riding in other countries but back in Washington state and Alaska drivers were generally pretty aware of bikes and gave bikes the right-of-way. Not always of course and Like I said I had a couple of accidents back in the states but nothing like this.
Just writing this post made me so angry that I snapped at my kids in class this morning after writing it.
Riding is the only joy, other than soju, that I have here. I've been a licensed driver since I bought my first street bike at 14 years old.
I am not a Korean basher and I really like living here. The stuff most people complain about are just minor annoyances to me, they don't involve threatening your life.
Another thing is that I live in a small community so there is a chance that the people I'm flipping off are my co-teachers, students' families, etc...
Another factor is that most citi bikes are driven by old men that drive 20 miles per hour on the side of the road, so I guess other drivers expect me to do as such.
I know it's probably going to be a loosing battle but I'm going to correct each driver one finger at a time. |

Careful with that. I gave a cab-driver who tried to cut me off the finger once and he followed me two blocks, passed me by inches, stopped in the middle of the road blocking off all kinds of traffic to yell at me, very briefly until he saw I was a foreigner, couldn't understand a word he was saying and loads of irate drivers were staring him down when he sheepishly got back into his taxi and went off. |
