| Now according to my co teacher if my school is closed because of swine flu then my winter vacation will be delayed to make for any time lost. WTF? |

I don't understand. How does delaying your vacation make [up] for lost time? A delay implies you still get all your vacation days. |

I'm planning to go home December 23rd but if my school has to close for a week because of swine flu then my school will want to remain open a week longer to make up for the school being closed because of swine flu. |

My friend's school has apparently told her that too.
The way I see it is if the school approves your vacation time and you've bought tickets, just use Korea's favorite phrase "It is not possible" when they ask you to change your plans. |

This would seem to be normal operating procedure for public schools. It is part of the deal that comes with the public school contract. Even if it is not stated in your contract, you know or should have known that under special circumstances, your vacation would be delayed.
In the US, if a public school closes for several days, snow days for example, then they will extend the school year into the summer and shorten the summer vacation period, or some other vacation period if one was available. The same would be required if there were a closing for swine flu at an American school. All teachers have to show up for the longer schedule along with the students. |

They don't do this in Ireland (or at least not when I was in school there) and even if pretty sure they do they wouldn't do it at the start of major holiday when many people have made plans to travel overseas. |

Tell that too the 25% Koreans that call themselves Christian. Anyways is it too much to ask that the powers that be consider the thousands of westerners who might want to visit their home country before arbitrarily deciding to change the vacation dates. It's not like they don't know our vacation plans in advance or anything like that now is it?
My girlfriend who works at University is planning to come to Ireland with me at Christmas. She has to be back by the 4th for her winter camp so postponing her vacation isn't really an option for her. |

| Where I last lived in the US, some kids kept calling in bomb scares to get out of school. The school year was delayed for all those days and the teachers had to stay over a week longer then they were supposed to. |

I lived in Florida and sometimes school would close due to hurricanes. We were supposed to make up the days at the end of the school year but the governor usually said we didn't have to and they eventually built in 3 hurricane days a year just in case.
We apparently have 7 kids today with swine flu. My teacher was like "I don't think it's any worse than the regular flu, I don't think it's a big deal". I wish more Korean teachers thought like that! |
