Damned if he did and damned if he didn't?
Quote: |
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A local high school principal has retired after staff members said he showed them surveillance video of two students having sex.
PDF: Resignation Letter, Complaints
Male High School Principal Dave Wilson is currently using his remaining vacation and leave days.
His retirement becomes official Nov. 1, but his tenure at Male is over.

Five staff members were called in to watch the tape where inappropriate comments were made during the viewing. One staff member walked out--seen enough, two others made complaints which lead to the principal's resignation (retiring).
According to another news report, the school's Security and Investigations said the tapes needed to be erased immediately.
Quote: |
The staff member said Keith Kiper with the districts security and investigations unit was contacted about the tape and advised it needed to be erased immediately because of the pornographic nature. |
As principal, he should have been aware of the policy on porn being captured on his surveillance cameras--needing to be erased. Did he call the group together as witnesses then for when he intended to (have his VP) discipline the students?
His offensive comments are inexcusable, but my question is what is the purpose of video cameras if the evidence of this type of behaviour is to be destroyed. And was it then appropriate to have this assembled 'viewing' in the first place? |

Sounds like it is all part of the hyper sensitive crap going on in America that if two teens have sex and it lands on video then it is the most vile evil. Really, the video tape should have been used as evidence to discipline the students then destroyed. As for bringing in a group of teachers to watch it, I think that was a very bad judgment call. What the principal should have done was call his district superintendent and had his boss notified about the tape. The policy that requires the tape destroyed immediately is illogical and makes no sense to me. What if it was a rape? That tape would be the only evidence and because two teens were naked and humping, it cannot exist? Give me a break. It isn't like people are getting off on this stuff. |

Regarding destroying the tape, I can understand one reason why it might have been done. There would always be a chance that it might fall in the wrong hands and end up on Internet; especially as the students are juveniles, the school could end up in hot water. As it was reported that the school and parents had dealt with the individuals, the existence of the tape served no further purpose and became only a liability. |

One statement says the tape lasted ten minutes, the other statement says 10-15 minutes and that Wilson and others (no names, not even redacted ones) had been viewing the cameras in live time. Surely those individuals would have sufficed for witnessing the event? It seems at least one of the teachers called in to see it was a class advisor. And from some of the comments I read, they want the teachers to handle discipline as much as possible.
Which brings me to this question: Do schools have security personnel sitting around viewing a bank of monitors? Someone caught the action (live time), informed the principal who came around to watch too before hauling himself down to the cafeteria to chase them outta there? Or where they sitting around his office surfing the cams just looking for trouble? (Because they knew this kind of stuff was going on?) |

He obviously knew it was going on because the article stated 'he knew the sex was taking place at the time it happened, but waited for the students to finish and then sent them home.'
I'm not sure if he was watching on CCTV or was watching firsthand, but either way it sounds uncomfortable.
Speaking of uncomfortable, couldn't the students have found a better place for this after school than the lunchroom? |

People are such ninnies. The principal was having a laugh. Were he a pervert, he wouldn't have invited other staff members to laugh at it as well.
No punitive action necessary.
Were I the principal, I'd have marched down to the cafeteria, banged on the door, and yelled in: "FYI, we can see you on the security camera!"
I guarantee you that it won't happen again. |
