How would you explain the usage of "that that" to kids in your classroom, both the grammatical and common usage rules behind it?

I know that that is enough to drive anyone crazy.

I know that (I understand)
that (the grammar rule in question)
is enough to drive anyone crazy. (is enough to drive anyone crazy.)

maybe that will help?

Sometimes its ok to use serial words.

Quote:

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo."

You just need to understand what function each word is playing.

Don't forget 'had had' as another example. Or even, "That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is that it? It is."

Whenever I'm asked about this, I tell my students that that last that, that's a stutter.

I can follow that up to the 5th buffalo. I read it like this:

Bison are buffaloing other Bison from Buffalo, New York. = Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

You've got me on the last four though. Wait.. Just checked out the wiki.

Those buffalo from Buffalo whom are capable of buffaloing other buffalo from Buffalo, are capable of buffaloing Buffalo buffalo.

Naw, I'm still lost. Without "whom," I don't see how this works.

I read this one in Pinkers "The Language Instinct"...and you are correct...it does require whom...though as this thread is about the overuse(optional use) of the noun clause marker...whom(that)...can be omitted.

Buffalo buffalo (whom/that) Buffalo buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
adj. noun adj noun verb , verb adj noun.
