Times are hard in America and I felt this would be a good way to make money and see a bit of the world. I've applied to some ESL jobs but they turned me away for no other reason than the color of my skin. I'm not looking for pity I'm just looking for someone to give me an opportunity to partake in the Korean ESL experience. I'm open to teaching in both public and private schools. And I'm open to all age levels. If possible I would also like for someone to reach me with a phone number in the US that I could call and not have to worry about overseas charges. |

You can wait until the next round (dec/jan/feb?) and apply to SMOE - From what I can tell, they don't seem to discriminate based on race or nationality (as long as you are from an English speaking country...)
I don't know if Epik is the same, but you could look into it.
Go through one of the major recruiters if you are having troubles (or want to do smoe). There are a bunch of threads here on reputable ones, I'm sure. |

There are several black men and women working with EPIK in Ganwon-do |

EPIK is a good one to try too. Probably a good 50% or greater of the hagwons won't hire you if you're black. |

How can you be sure you were turned away 'for no other reason than the color of (your) skin'? Isn't it possible they simply found a more experienced/qualified applicant? |

Why wouldn't you take his word for it? Everyone knows most hagwon owners prefer white teachers and frequently discriminate against non-white applicants. And what white person gets turned down from multiple hagwon jobs anyway? |

You're going to have to work the emails and post resumes up like anyone else. Use email and have them call you (if necessary). |

I know it happens sometimes but it's still not good to make assumptions. Unless they told him directly (which I doubt) then it's entirely possible that there were other reasons. Remember the job market is tighter here than before and you likely will have more than one applicant for jobs now. |

Of course, it's a possibility. But from others' experiences of hearing "the principal wants a white teacher" and "the school wants a non-Asian teacher," along with advertisements reading "No gyopos," it's really be hoping against hope to give Korean employers/recruiters the benefit of the doubt. We all know this happens in Korea.

I know for a fact a TON of hagwons do not hire because of skin color. A lot do not hire WHITE people if they're not good looking enough. I know this because I have a friend who is a recruiter with many hagwons and they tell her the standards for hiring -- good looking and North American. I tried to get my black friend hired and it was not even a question.
OP, stick to the public school system or kindergarten if you're looking for a job. You'll just be facing a whole lot of stonewalling and rejection in the hagwon department. |

I have met several black teachers here working for both EPIK and hagwons. Follow one of the previous poster's advice and contact a bunch of recruiters. Eventually, if you persist, you'll come up trumps. There is no harm whatsoever in trying. If you've already got an electronic CV prepared and scanned photos read to send to recruiters over the Internet you're good to go.
Persevere. |
