Times are hard in America and I felt this would be a good way to make money and see a bit of the world. I've applied to some ESL jobs but they turned me away for no other reason than the color of my skin. I'm not looking for pity I'm just looking for someone to give me an opportunity to partake in the Korean ESL experience. I open to teaching both public and private schools, and open to all age levels. And if possible I would also like for someone to reach me with a phone number in the US that I could call and not have to worry about overseas charges.

I know of several Black men and women working in Gangwon-do with the EPIK program.

You'll be at a disadvantages in the hiring, but it's not impossible. Keep on looking and you'll get here. I would, however, make sure that they know you are black. While it's an atrocity, there have been black teachers who have been let go upon arrival.

Have your friends download skype. It is extremely cheap and has high quality.

I'm speaking on this topic because I want to try again at getting a ESL job in Korea. I wish it were simple for me to apply without worry of race, but I and other Blacks have yet to know that privilege. I was discouraged after trying and not getting results. But now I want to give it another shot, and my last post on this subject was months ago. Some are lucky to not have this issue, but until racism is no longer an issue in this industry, and employers donot turn people away because of the color of their skin, or other justifications of racism in the hiring practice, then I must continue to speak. Only wanting a White person to teach because the perception that the Western nations is White is just as racist as turning someone away because you don't like their skin color, or whatever stereotypes you may have of them. This is not interracial dating this is business. The saying goes treat others the way you want to be treated. That crosses all cultures, and surely should apply in business. Look at Obama, I would love if he spoke out on this issue, because it has been going on for a really long time, and someone in high position should address it. Doesn't his success say that their is a possibility that if you came to America or any other Western nation you will be dealing with Blacks and other people of color? I was born and raised in the US, and I worked just as hard as any White student to get my BA degree. If the demand of jobs out weighs the supply of teachers (from what I've been told), then their shouldnot be a reason that I get turned away from a job. I have no criminal history, I was born and raised in the US, and I have B.A. degree from a good university. And I don't mean to sound like I'm speaking in a angry tone, because I'm not. Nor am I looking to make people feel ashamed of themselves, or nervous about giving me a chance. Their is no reason to have a fear this Black man. Before all else I consider myself a world citizen and I'm a friend to all humanity. But sometimes old issues still effect us. This topic is not something people like to discuss but fair is fair.

Apply to EPIK, GEPIK or SMOE. I know a lot of black people working in the public schools.

I think it's horrible (and a little funny, because the world sucks) that you even have to explain yourself.
Keep putting in apps. Because discrimination is quid pro quo across the races, genders, ethnicities. Even Koreans get it in Korea (gyopos, adoptees...) You'll get hired. It's been a bad market for teachers.

Preaching to the choir mate. I do trust then, in your thirst for change, you have written to the people who can actually do something about this? Hopefully you toned down the bold rhetoric a bit, save you coming off a bit over-the-top. Do also realize the current state of the industry here; many people (not only blacks) are being denied jobs.♦

I didn't link previously to silence you. Simply to illustrate that first, this topic is fresh elsewhere, so you may want to ring in there instead of re-treading newly stomped ground (it's called 'redundant', regardless of the sensitive nature of the topic), and second, to foreshadow where this thread may also end up.

Best of luck to you.

Before you pull out the race card, perhaps you should examine your English language ability. Your post is riddled with grammatical and spelling mistakes. After all, you are trying to teach English and frankly, I would not hire you based simply on your writing ability.

That's a very Asian language native speaker-like sentence you got there.

It is still largely socially acceptable to be openly bigoted here in Korea...be prepared for this. As a white person, I still find that racism figures in numerous social, business, and bureaucratic exchanges. You only have to go as far as the neighborhood PC bang in my neighborhood, festooned with an iron eagle and swastika.

Not all, but many Koreans do not even acknowledge racism as wrong or even negative. Excluding people for even the minutest differences (even other Koreans) is still quite commonplace.

Don't lose heart. At my last job at a Korean university in Seoul, the head teacher was African American. He was well respected and he was recognized as an excellent teacher.

I know that SLP in Ilsan has hired African Americans in the past, and those teachers were happy there.
