Hi folks.
I am struggling to decide on which PDF/E-book reader I want to buy.
At first, the Kindle 2 looked great, until I found out that you can only read Amazon products. What rubbish. It's like buying a Yamaha scooter and them saying you can only use Yamaha fuel.
The Nuutboek/Nuutbook, which is available here in Korea seems great too, except for the bad quality music player.
Anyway, then the Sony PSR 707. I have read conflicting reports regarding the pdf downloads. Some say you have to purchase pdf's, others say you don't. So it has the same issue as the Kindle, or not.... confusion.
Also, it doesn't seem to be that fast. Is this true? And does anyone have an idea of the music quality?
ALL I WANT:
Is a decent pdf reader, that will take any pdf I copy onto the memory card, that has a large-ish display, with decent sound output. Colour options would be a bonus.
Any ideas? Much appreciated. |

Looking at the ebook readers that are slated to come out this holiday season and Q1 next year, you may be best off to wait. There's the B&N Nook with dual screens, the Plastic Logic's Que, Alex's dual-screen, Android-powered machine, there's LG's solar-powered reader (concept only, I think). Then there's another company that is using, not e-ink, but the same display you find on old calculators, effectively dropping the price of the unit to a measly $150.
I'm not sure that the music quality on these will be very good, at least not for a while because most people aren't focusing on that in the device. Besides, the battery would be terrible for listening to music, I imagine well under 10 hours, and if I were forced to put a more exact estimate I'd say ~5 hours.
For the Sony, the biggest problem is getting it here. The 505 was exactly what I wanted, but I didn't want to bother with shipping it here and waiting. If you aren't worried about getting it shipped from outside of the country, then there's less to worry about.
Knowing what I know now, after buying the Nuutbook, I would focus almost entirely on how the device renders pages and zooms. All the ones I've heard of (with the possible exception of the 505) creates a terrible page break when they zoom in, so that only a few lines of text may end up on the screen, and you have to page over to find the rest.
Another thing to consider is where you'll get your documents and/or the quality of the documents. All the books I get are from piratebay.org, with the quality ranging from excellent to barely tolerable. This makes a huge difference, and the device itself is not to blame for that. |
