I think a better question is artists whose second piece is better than their first. That happens far less often.

I'd have to strongly dissagree there.

So many examples... but too many, so I wont.

Anyway back on topic - that's a different thread and Ekul please feel free to start it if you like.

Hmmm, Jackie brown was to self conciously 'cut up' - you know the whole non linear narrative convention - crassly, conceitedly and pretentiously so for me to like the film. Just too much 'oooh look at me I'm being so clever...' A forgivable mistake for a film student or first time helmer, but not for Someone who should know better.

Well, I agree it's not on par with his first, Reservoir Dogs, which was the whole point of your thread, but still, I liked Jackie Brown a lot, and never had the "ooh look at me" problem that you did. You obviously know your stuff about movies. Perhaps you were over analyzing it.

Or, maybe I liked it not so much because of Tarantinos' direction but because of the individual performances of Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Deniro. In fact, I liked Jackson more in Jackie Brown than I did in P. Fiction. One of his best roles!!

Anyway, what do you think about what I said about the Sixth Sense?

I cannot disagree on the Leonard. I love that album.

As for other great musical firsts:

The Constantines - s/t
-I'm sick to be missing their 10th anniversary shows in T.O.

The Band - Music from Big Pink
-it doesn't get much better than this.

Elliot Smith - Roman Candle
-this one could be argued, but it'll always be my favorite Smith album.

Unbreakable stands up to repeated viewing better than Sixth Sense. I think I just hate Haley Joe Osment.

I really liked "The Village". M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors - he's a little unpredictable and plays a lot with angles. "The Happening" was another one I liked from him. Cool themes and original plot twists...

I'd say first published work for a writer. Not retrospectively.

First publicly performed for a classical composer and first work released onto record / cd. tape etc for modern musician. Again, noot retrospective releases of old studio or bedroom recording sessiosn etc....

Painters, sculpturs... Hmmm, I guess first commisioned piece...? First sold piece....?

Filmakers, absolutely, first full leangth film that went to tv, dvd, or cinema etc, not retrospectively discovered short films, student films etc....

Romero-"Dawn of the Dead" was a great film.

+1

I also don't believe in ghosts which is a problem. Mr. Glass's search for his place in the universe is heartbreaking and horrifying. I think his mom sells the whole film. You can't just write him off because of her.
