|
|
So I've already pre-ordered Windows 7 Upgrade for $30 (using my student email address). Now all I need is a legit OS to upgrade it from.
My plan is to buy an OEM cd from ebay (for around $30), install this, then install Windows 7. Will this work. Is there an easier way? |

I'm currently pissed at the digital river company right now. I might have to cancel my order. It says "upgrade" but the guy at digital river told me it would work as a full install. Now I'm not so sure I was given correct information. I'm awaiting an e-mail. |

Yeah, I kinda led myself to believe that it was a full version, but after doing a bit of googling, I started to have doubts. I read somewhere that the student version is identical to the retail upgrade, which I think you need an xp/license key for. We probably won't find out for sure until the 22nd, but if you get a reply from the digitalriver guy, please share. |

Not really sure I see the problem here. Just use the CD key that came with the version of Windows you are using on your computer right now. You can't possibly be using Windows 98. You've got to be using either XP or Vista, so just use that CD key. Seems pretty simple to me. |

I'm glad I have a dell. A copy of the OEM CD should work as Dell (and a few other manufacturers) have some kind of volume licensing for OEMs that doesn't require individual activation. Any DELL CD works perfectly on any Dell. |

It should work.
Also, Windows 7 is super sexy. I use it for all my systems at home. It runs MUCH faster than Vista and actually runs pretty smooth compared to XP. I am thoroughly happy with the new OS. |

I did get a reply, and he said this. Another poster on Tomshardware got the same response when he asked, only it said that keys from other OS's weren't needed on a new computer install. Only the Microsoft people on the MS help forum said it was just an upgrade! Everyone on Tom's is arguing over it, and it's likely to turn into a big ol' mess if it doesn't work as digital river says it will. I'm seriously thinking of canceling. Apparently, you can contact MS directly and get the same deal anyway, and they will agree to send you a FULL version disk or something. See Tom's Hardware for more. Here is what I was sent:

Thanks for posting their reply. I must say I liked this part:
"This is a full version of Windows 7 so you can install it to a computer
which does not have an Operating System installed or a different
Operating System installed."
It makes me wonder why they called it an upgrade if it's a full version. |

Find/download a copy of Windows 7 RC or RTM version. They are free. microsoft stopped giving out CD-KEys for the RC and RTM version. If you can find one of those free keys they gave out, you can "upgrade" your RTM version of Windows 7 to the full retail version, by just paying the Upgrade price.
The best part..... all it does is change the CD key on your machine from the Windows 7 RTM to the Windows 7 Retail. That's it. Everything else is the same. No setups, no upgrades, nothign. |

I heard back from Digital River yet again. Here is what they said:

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting the Windows 7 Offer online store.
We understand that you are interested to purchase Windows 7 Upgrade
through our online store.
We apologize for the confusion that this issue might have caused you..
The Windows 7 offered in this promotion is a full version. You can
install this product even though you do not have a previous Operating
System installed in your computer or if you want to make a multi boot
using Windows 7. The "Upgrade" included in the product name is just
because Windows 7 is the
latest Operating System Windows developed.
Please reply if you still want to cancel this order.
Sincerely,
Joanna A.

Once again, Microsoft has made something as simple as a new OS confusing.
Reminds me of the whole, "Windows Vista Capable, Windows Vista Certified" fiasco. |

Well, today's the day. Got my email with download instructions. It mentions nothing of needing an old OS. Here are the steps they wrote:
Quote: |
Step 1: To prepare for your installation, please review the installation instructions here
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows
Step 2: Copy and paste the link below into your browser
Step 3: You will download a small file called a download manager that will facilitate the download of Windows 7
Step 4: Navigate to the location where you saved the small file, open it, select the location you would like the Windows 7 files downloaded to and begin the download of Windows 7
Step 5: When the download of the Windows 7 files are complete, start the installation of Windows 7 by clicking on the file that has the extension ‘.exe.’
Step 6: Insert the 25 character product key Product Key (FPP) for
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade - 64 bit:
yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda |
It all sounds promising, but I think I'm gonna wait 'til the weekend, just in case. |

Does anybody know how to buy Windows 7 US version if you don't have a US address? I tried all day from the MS store in all countries where I have/had an address and credit card and where the language is or can be set to English.
What I am looking for is a 119.99 USD Home Premium upgrade.
UK prices are much higher than that.
German prices are ridiculous - 119.99 EURO (that's 50% over US price) and there may be 19% VAT on top of that, and I don't know if the OS will be German language only (meaning another 100 Euro on top to buy the Ultimate edition)
Most of Asia is still selling Vista only, including Thailand.
Last year I got Office 2007 from a trial on a computer which I bought in Thailand, US version, using Korean card and it worked.
Any known shops that sell visa download w/o US address? Paypal would be nice. Or a boxed copy of the US version (not Korean) in a Yongsan shop?
Any ideas? I don't want to start with bittorrent. |

I thought this was a day early, but Windows 7 is now available from digital river. I got my link and am downloading it. I'm a little confused because it says 1 of 3 , but is downloading about 3 gigs. I didn't expect 3 discs? Hmm... Well, I'm 71% done. Will find out soon, I suppose. |

Finished the download. It's between 2 and 3 gigs. Total of 3 files, plus the downloader. I'll try installing tonight and update. |
