HI, just have a question...we all get 15 paid sick days, what about if you use all 15 paid sick days? do we get unpaid sick days? what does your school do?

I believe there is a provision for unpaid sick days in the contract, however it is at the school's discretion. It would have to be for something serious though I would imagine, like being in a car accident that required a lot of surgery and rehabilitation.....I don't think they'd be too happy if you used all 15 days for colds and flu and then wanted to use another few days for yet another cold.

Wouldn't help your chances of renewing at your current workplace, getting a job in the future or a positive reference.

Wow! Have you used all of yours already? I use one maybe every 3-4 months and that almost always involves a trip to the hospital for antibiotics or a shot.

You can take more sick days once you've used up your paid ones. They'll be unpaid, which is fair according to the contract, but you can use them. I think they divide the number of working days between your last pay date and your next one by the number of sick days you took, then dock the pay by that percentage.

Depending on your school, you might even get paid for them if they aren't crazy about tracking your absences and such. I used about six or seven days last year and only bothered to document four of them. Technically I could've taken many more days but I'm not interested in cheating my school, heh.

Keep in mind that if you plan on renewing it's best to only take days when you're really sick. Don't waste them on hangovers (well, more than a couple of times, anyway). Koreans tend to come to school with bad colds, the flu, etc. and they typically expect the same of you. I doubt that taking many sick days would really influence your ability to renew if you're a good teacher but you never know.

Yeah, only taken 1 sick day so far in 6 months.

No point in abusing it for people that want to renew.

they shouldn't get mad at you guys for taking your sick days if you're sick. YOu are entiltled to your paid sick days, that's why they are in the contract. If your school has a problem with it, then that's not your fault, you're not the one who wrote the contract.

Oh, definitely take the sick days then. If you're obviously sick then do it for sure. I'd take a sick day or two with those symptoms. I would only consider not taking one if I had something minor, like a sore throat or a cough that only happened recently.

No one at my school has ever complained about me taking sick days, though I've heard bad things from other schools (requesting doctors notes for a single sick day, etc.).

Actually, one Monday in the summer I came in with slight sunburn (from going to Haeundae that weekend). I was in no way sick, nor having any symptoms from anything. I was just a bit red. The school's head teacher insisted that I go home and take a sick day even though he knew it was just a slight sunburn. I guess if you LOOK sick you will get more sympathy, heh.
