1156 and improving!
what a depressing life to live for asmith... not only is the sky constantly falling, but the reality that doesn't ever justify his worries must be a double blow to his happiness |

What makes you think he wasn't overly pessimistic in order to make the reality seem more positive? Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best.
I was prepared to have awful students at my middle school. What a pleasant surprise when the 1st graders turned out to be well-behaved. 2nd and 3rd graders are still a bunch of mouth breathers. whatever. |

Today, it's at 1179.
It's slowly losing its value again.
By March, it will be devalued to 1500 to 1600 so that Koreans will be able to sell their stuff to cash-strapped Americans.
We aren't out of the woods. In fact, this nightmarish ride has barely begun.
Isn't the global economy a beautiful thing? |
OMG!!! I'm running straight to the bank to get rid of all my won. What am I going to do? Hey, I know! I think I'll convert it into Zimbabwean currency.
I wonder which sock asmith will be hiding behind when March rolls around and the won is nowhere near 1500... |

"The global dollar weakness is still on, so it doesn't look easy for the BOK alone to keep bucking the trend," said a foreign-bank trader.
Samsung Futures analyst Jeon Seung-ji said, "The dollar's bear trend is just too strong. If this continues, we can't rule out the possibility of the dollar falling to near KRW1,140." |
The BOK bought $1-1.5 billion today, and the won still gained against the dollar. I imagine their reserves are quite full now, but any attempt to control the won from gaining strength against the dollar is going to fail. It will be interesting to see where the won levels off at though. I'm hoping it will get get down to 1,100 before I cash out in January |

1178.
And they are going to keep buying those dollars.
The won seems pegged to the dollar. |

Despite all the media here, the problem isn't the won, it's the US Dollar. The won's recent appreciation is primarlily due to a weakening in the US dollar.
As Korea exports more to the EU than to the US, the ASEAN FTA has the potential for huge market growth, and the won isn't as strong as the Japanese Yen, Korea will be doing fine thank you very much.
However the largest economy in the world is cactus, record fiscal and current account deficits could drive the US dollar to about 50 euro cents.
Save enough to buy an apartment here and you can a town stateside in 2 years.
Spare some sympathy for your Aussie brothers, the Aussie is almost at 1,100 to the won, the Australian economy is great, and there are plenty of jobs in Australia. The only problem, is I can't afford to rent let alone buy a house there! |
