I know some hagwons like to try to get you to pay housing deposits, which you shouldn't, but I was wondering how many people in public schools have to pay one. In Daegu we have to pay 300,000 a month for the first two (maybe 3?) months. We get the money back at the end, but still it's a big chunk of our paycheck! My friend in Busan said there is no housing deposit in their contracts, so I'm wondering if it's a Daegu thing or if there are a lot of other places that require one.

Most if not all require you to put down a deposit. I am in GEPIK and we have to pay 300k a month for the first 3 months and we as well will get this back at the end of the contract if you will not renew at the same school. If you renew at the same school the money is held over unitl the time that you are no longer renewing with them.

My deposit in Seoul is 500k. Guess compared to 300k three months in a row, I can't complain.

Can't speak for other EPIK-type contracts...but the 2009 EPIK (EPIC) contract (in chungnam) has no housing deposit.

It does if you're working for an elementary school, or so they told me when I wanted to change jobs. I moved on instead. No need to worry about it in a perfect world.

Certain public employers require them for two reasons: they have as much respect for the law as they do their employees (attitudes like 'Alaskaman's & 'roadworks' only serve to re-enforce this practice because no one has yet challenged it in court); and, they aren't stupid. Not only do 'deposits' serve to hold POed waygooken 'hostage', if one takes W900,000 from each foreigner and invests it at 6% interest...

Some schools like to add that in of their own initiative. But last time I checked on-line the official 2009 chungnam contract had no deposit.

They are only illegal if they take it from you without your approval. Like sick days, deposits are a contractual issue...you sign the contract with them in there, then they are legal. Just as a contract is perfectly legal if you sign one that has no sick days.

However if you should leave early, you should still get the deposit back...they can't keep it as Article 20 of the KLSA forbids this.

I fail to follow your logic here TUM - one can't compare 'something' to 'naught'.

Labor Standards Act
Article 27 (Prohibition of Predetermination of Nonobservance)
An employer shall not enter into any contract by which a penalty or indemnity for possible damages incurred from nonobservance of a labor contract is predetermined.


The fact any (amount of) wages are withheld constitutes predetermination. All public contracts contain an indemnity article, thus making 'housing deposits' illegal.

WTF? Article 20 is - Definition of Contractual Working Hours. Am I reading the wrong (unamended) version of the LSA... what do working hours have to do with housing deposits? Shocked

Bottom line - anywhere in the world, possession is 9/10ths of the law. The vast majority of public employers will not fail to (eventually) return the deposit (sans interest). However, should a dispute be factored into the equation that leads to resignation or dismissal... Rolling Eyes
