Anyone have any idea for some good short term investments. Seems the Korean stock market has been doing fairly well these days. Anyone have any recommendations for a good investment in the short term?

The time to invest is when things have tanked, not when things have done well. You missed the ride. The fall should begin again soon. Then get ready to put your $$$ in there.

I'd say both the Korean and Chinese Index funds would be safe but profitable bets.

how short term? Investing short term obviously entails more risk. I would look to Taiwan. Ideally, it would have been best to invest in March or April, but Taiwan is opening up to trade with China so that will be productive. As far as currencies go I'd invest in the won. Again, would have been best to invest in March, but even now the won is undervalued at 1220. By next spring, 1100 or better is a fair estimate.

I wouldn't invest in anything but gold.

The markets are rigged.

We are on are way to financial oblivion.

Gold is where it's at.

If the world turns to crap then guns and ammo is going to be the place to be. You really think gold is going to be worth jack in a barter system?

So how about for sixth months to a year within Korea? Where would you invest for that short-term, say a few cheon-man wons? My money's already in Won and I want to keep it here since I don't think I'm that sophisticated financially to do anything crossing international boundaries. Thanks.

Invest in a hagwon, or a ddokboki-stand. You have to take advantage of your local knowledge.

Really? You would really do that - invest in a deokbogi stand or a hagwon? Why?

The deokbogi stand was a bit of a joke. I don't think you'll get rich by selling deokbogi.

But if I had the knowledge and connections, I think a hagwon is one of the best investment opportunity in Korea. However, I don't have either so I'll probably just get ripped off, but I would guess that an English-teacher who has been in Korea for some years might be able to pull it off. To try to earn money by picking the right stocks (with my knowledge level and probably with yours too) is just gambling with better returns. Investment in local industry or local firms is where you have an advantage. Identify which businesses have potential and which doesn't. Invest heavily in a few businesses and try to fix any obvious mistakes they are making.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think I have the knowledge or risk-adversity level for investing in local business. The way I've seen businesses run here, I don't think I'd be comfortable investing in hardly ANY local business, but thanks for the idea.

Depending on the location, dukbokki stands do well here.

You'd be surprised.

(Even more so given that it's a cash business).

There's a super popular Ddeokboki stand near Seolleung Station in Gangnam. The adjumma that works/owns it drives the newest model S-Class.

You could create an internet forum for foreigners teaching English as a Secondary Language throughout the world.
