Well, I'm thinking of popping the question. Can anyone tell me what the procedure is here? Do I buy just the engagement ring first, and the band later? How much should I spend. She's made it clear that I shouldn't spend too much on the ring, but she does want an expensive wedding. Any and all information concerning this matter would be very much appreciated. |

As I have recently learned- Koreans don't generally do engagement rings...they often just want a glitzy wedding ring...In my case I did the trad western way...diamond engagement... simple band for wedding.
your biggest dilemma is tackiness control when it comes to the wedding. Koreans have morphed western style weddings with 100X cheesiness.. try to resist...good luck |

Don't waste your time buying a ring in Korea. Rip Off City!
Go to: http://jewellerycatalogue.co.uk/
I just bought a half ounce signet ring here for 170 pounds. I did
extensive research before I ordered from here. You will not find
a cheaper place for jewellery. |

Shouldn't I spend at least 2 months salary? One month? I'm sure she wants the engagement ring. |

I dream of something from Tiffany's.
You can find something nice (and also moderately priced) at a department store- Hyundai, Shinsegae. Look around. |

There are some streets filled with jewellery shops only.
Nice rings in the UK, so my wife got hers there for our pre-wedding blessing.
I got my wedding band in Cholsan-dong, Gwangmyeong-si. There will be similar streets in most big dongs. |

The rule is two months salary. Stick it on a card and ask for a 12 month plan.
Try to get a traditional Korean wedding. Trust me...you'll save a small fortune. |

LOL at the comment above.
The Korean weddings can bring your bank account to it's knees. I would try to convince you out of spending a shit ton of money on a single day rathern than being able to buy a house, car, or go to graduate school earlier, but I'm sure your girlfriend/fiancee is caving into the pressure from her family and the Korean society in general.
I'm lucky me and mine have already agreed to a small dinner of only her immediate family and less than a dozen friends, then heading to city hall to get our papers signed.
Anyways, what I've noticed is many Koreans don't wear their rings at all. I'm not sure of the reason but I've just noticed so I wouldn't worry too much about the ring. |

I was listening to an NPR radio show on this subject a few weeks ago. The experts compared a Tiffany diamond with a Costco diamond, the quality of the two were the same. The Costco was 6,000 cheaper. With Tiffany you're paying for the service and the setting. Anyway, I still went with Tiffany 11 years ago when I got married. She's worth the extra 6K |

There's a rule? Man, what a marketers dream.
The wedding really ought to pay for itself and then some ie people give money at the door. If her family is organising it that money may end up in their pockets-the money-go-round of Korean get togethers (but someone usually ends up on top)

Most Korean teachers I know don't wear their wedding bands. It amazes me. These are men and women. |

When we got married rings weren't a priority. I never wore a ring in my life so before we took the plunge to buy anything expensive we bought some 5 dollar stainless steel rings to give it a try. I lasted a few days before I took the thing and tossed it. So unbelievably annoying. My wife is happy that we didn't waste money on expensive rings. Our money went into investments.
We are happily married. Rings didn't affect our happiness. My wife likes jewelry, I don't. I have my motorbikes, she has some jewelry. What ever floats your collective boat. |

My ring is a Tiffany. We bought it online from Tiffany's in NY and had it shipped to my parents. They brought it over. Mom wore it around her neck. If you can believe it, the first one actually had a blemish in it! Tiffany's exchanged it immediately. We saved 33% over the outlandish Korean prices here (saved about $800 at the time). Fun thing was we could go to the store in Lotte at COEX and try it on first.
Rings are a huge rip-off here. Junk for crazy prices. Jungno sells rings, but they're crap, IMHO. |

I think it was a year or two after we were married that we bought our rings. We were in Bangkok at the time and there were many many gold shops. Then she reminded me that I did promise wedding rings.
Bought a set of his/her gold rings for around 500,000 won. |
