I am curious because I have always heard that private lessons are great, but if you get caught then you really get hammered. I have an E-2 visa. My Hagwon owner has subtly hinted that he wouldn't care too much if I did some, but he should not know about them. I met a guy that said the Hagwon owner can sign off on them, then I pay taxes and they would be legal. Does anybody know if this is true? How does the process work to make it all legal if it is true?

Pretty sure they'd have to happen at your workplace for it to be legal.

Actually, he'd probably have to run it as a "one on one class" offered by the hagwon, and which you get paid a "special overtime rate" for.

Yeah, it's legal...until you get caught......Teaching privates on an E2 is not legal. Immigration has to give permission and stamp your passport for most things. If your boss says it's ok...he/she is wrong. Paying taxes does not stop the man from coming down on you. Now....if the student is paying the hogwon and you are meeting them outside to teach them...it's a gray area still. Many are teaching privates on E2 visas and getting away with it....and chances are you won't get caught...

If you are no an E2 visa it is illegal for you to teach anywhere other than the address listed on your ARC.

You cannot legally teach privates or classes created by your own hogwan or teach free lessons or give volunteer lessons or do any other kind of work anywhere but at the address listed on your ARC.

It's illegal on all no matter what visa you have E or F. It's also illegal for Koreans. It is legal for you to teach at your school and get paid whatever your boss wants to pay you...as long as someone pays taxes.

Privates are illegal. They are great, but not for monetary reasons.

Thanks for your replies. If it's not legal, I'm not gonna mess with it. The risk is just a little more than I am willing to deal with.

Wise move. Cool

I've seen idiots brag in bars about how much they're making 'doing privates'. A year ago, one even phoned me trying to raise money for his deportation airfare. My reply (just before I hung up) was "What did I tell you?"

So you actually know someone that was caught and deported? It always seems to be a friend of a friend with stuff like this. How'd they get caught?

He made his hogwan boss register all the employees with the NPS & NHIC. This resulted in deductions for premiums... which POed a co-worker (who was not eligible for a lump-sum pension refund)... so she 'squealed' on him to Immi.

During my time here I've known 2 people to get tossed out of the country. I've also known 3 who got caught and were fined/fired. These are/were people I've known...not friends of friends or whatever. It does happen, it's rare, but it does.

1) Don't be an [Mod Edit] about it. (the two who got deported were loudmouths that nobody lked).

2) Tell nobody (not even your girlfriend. If the relationship breaks up then there in some ammo for the to use)

3) Leave no proof (two of the idiots I knew who got caught and fined had moms depositing $$ into their banks.)

4) Carry a laptop. If you get caught going into someone's place "I'm here to play games with my wife's/gf's/friend's friend's kid.

I have a friend who got caught. She used a well known online recruiting agency(I Know, I know). I was never clear as to weather the police or Immi caught her. She said the police questioned her and they caught her through her recruiter. When her recruiter was busted she gave up all the info on her "tutors".
Strangely. my friend was neither fined nor deported although she left shortly after upon completion of her contract. The recruiter(Korean woman said she was fined 5 mil). There could be repercussions if my friend tries to come back to Korea tho' no mention was made of it. Believe me she was warned about the dangers of doing privates and especially of using online recruiters.

Discussions regarding privates violate the TOS unless you clearly have legal authorization for them.
