Hey,
I was wondering, I have applied through a recruitment agency for EPIK 2010. I am completely set on Busan now. The recruiter told me I will not know the exact location until I am in Korea at training. Has anyone else been told this? Or does it make a difference if you apply directly through the EPIK website?
If that is the case, does anyone know any good private schools in Busan?

You'll probably know which province you're going to before the orientation. But, you most likely won't know exactly where you're going until you're on the bus, on the day of, on your way to where your school will pick you up.

You first know the location you are going to when you receive your contracts and notice of appointment NOA. This usually is sent to you in mid-late January AFTER your have been accepted and confirmed by the POE who selected you to hire.
All POE make the final choice NOT EPIK.
There is always a 50% chance you will get sent where you didn't want to be, but for 2010 there are many more positions in Busan available than previous years, so the odds may be better.

why anyone would accept a job like this is beyond me. You're better off going to Korea and finding a job in the place you want to live. You could be given a horrible location.

Try being young an jobless br_owen. You'll do anything, go any where, just to get away from that sense of uselessness.

Then you must apply through a recruiter working for the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (BMOE).

Everything depends on the definition of "exact location"... within the country... within a province... within a district... or within a city?

Thousands of people have been told this.

Yes. If you apply directly to EPIK, they can send you virtually anywhere in the country.

The system is fraught with purposeful obfuscation. EPIK is the 'umbrella' (under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) with the mandate to oversee and fund all public, foreign, English teachers in Korea. 'Dave's' does not have enough bandwidth (and my lifetime is finite) to explain every possible permutation. However, in a nutshell there are a few things of which you should be aware:

1. recruiters work for the employer not the employee;
2. some recruiters lie;
3. some employers lie.

At some point you will be required to 'take a leap of faith'; but, the bottom line is read your contract. If you are not comfortable with all the articles, dont sign it!

Busan Office of Education ( BMOE) does not use recruiters for their own public school positions any more, it sources all teachers directly from the main EPIK intake.
In March 2009 BMOE tried hiring its own teachers and this was just chaos with problems organizing things, so went back to using EPIK only for the Sept intake and 2010.
I guess some EPIK recruiters may get thrown a few runners jobs or casual positons as they come up at other times though.
