It would be much easier and cheaper just to download and burn an English version of Windows and install it yourself. |

The problem with downloading an OS is that you'll need a specific one for your make. HP computers, for example, are bios'd to only accept HP Windows. I think you can use a hacked Bios on certain computers to get around this. Just trying to load any old copy of Windows won't work. |

If that was the case, I'd never buy an HP computer. But I don't think that's the case.
HP don't actually make motherboards, AFAIK......at least I've never seen an HP motherboard for sale. So, whoever makes the motherboard chooses the BIOS to use for that mobo. |

I think that refers to downloaded OEM versions of Windows. They don't need activation (I believe) but will check the motherboard or BIOS info during installation, hence the need to trick the installer by emulating a certain hardware manufacturer.
Some OEM versions of certain manufacturers have been leaked and can be downloaded for free (ahem).
For Vista there a language packs that can switch the OS to another language. These downloads are free from Microsoft for the Ultimate version. |

If you download an oem version then you deserve what you get. If you're going to pirate a piece of software just get the retail version and that'll work on any hardware configuration, infact these days the pirate versions are better than the legit because they are more streamlined (less crap) and have more driver support. |

This reminds me of the days when DVD would only play on equipment of a certain region - well the DVD still are locked but the players are not. Or DRM (?) protected CD and MP3 files... in all cases, the buyer of the legitimate product had serious disadvantages while the user of "liberated" products or media players had none plus the added financial benefit of getting things for free or close to.
Right now I really(!) want to try Windows 7 but MS US or Newegg won't let me use their store without a US address and credit card, MS Europe will charge me 50% more because for them 1 USD = 1 Euro, MS UK is still overpriced and MS Korea sells the Korean language version which is useless for me. MS Thailand is still selling Vista as the most advanced MS-OS. Korean prices were quite good though.
Now HOW could I possibly use Windows 7 without overpaying, learning a foreign language or getting US residence?
Oh... right |

Buy the Ultimate version and when you install it, choose one of 35 or so different languages to use. You can also switch languages on different profiles so if you have a spouse that speaks another language, their profile can be in their mother tongue and yours will stay in English. This also worked in Vista Ultimate. |

Correct (I even own a full license to Vista Ultimate, not that it has done me any good) but: I only need Win7 Home Premium Upgrade (119 USD) after carefully checking the 2 alternatives (professional and ultimate), so buying a 219 USD package... that's even more expensive than the full Home Premium license.
Perhaps some convoluted method could work... buying a Korean license key (with the DVD of course) from a shop in Technomart or Yongsan, and finding a kind heart with the English DVD or ISO for a copy (without their license information, naturally).
Still harder than googeling (googling?) a torrent.
I forgot that the Euro versions may have 19% VAT slapped on the advertised prices. |
