The blatant abuse of these items by Koreans is deplorable, and I'd venture to say much worse than it has ever has been in West.

The only problem is, they probablt wouldn't enforce the law anyway.

As anyone who has done their driver's licence in Korea can tell you, using cell phones will driving is illegal and subject to a fine of 30k. The problem isn't the law, it's the law enforcers.

Yeah, it already is illegal, but you'd never know it unless you go on the US bases in Korea; the MPs on base do enforce that law and a lot of Koreans driving there learn this the hard way.

Taxi driver I rode with yesterday was talking on his cellphone while watching his dash-mounted tv.

They put their "precious" kids in the front seat still, what makes you think they will ban cellphones?

interesting...i always had the stereotype asian drivers were the worst, but since coming here, i've noticed some of these drivers are pretty damn good. i've seen far less accidents here than back in the states.

Kinda related to this, but anyone see the new ad for Child traffic safety? It's basically telling people to slow down while children are crossing the street.

In a way I'm glad to see this since Korea does have problems with children getting run over by cars.

In another way I think it's sad that you have to actually tell people the obvious fact that fast car + children on the street = injured or dead kid.

At the same time I feel like this ad won't accomplish anything just like the scores of other city and nation-wide campaigns that amount to nothing.

I don't hold that stereotype (I'm Asian and I drive pretty damn carefully) but I can understand why some people do. I don't think Koreans are bad drivers skillwise (they're pretty damn skilled to drive like they do and be still alive) but they generally don't give a damn about other people on the road. The statistics support this and if you want anecdotal evidence, I've been in several accidents in Korea and only one in the US. The driver involved in the US was Korean.

I was put in the front seat for a long time. People in rural Canada still do it. And even when I left and the cellphone ban had been on for awhile, people were still doing it.

I'm not saying it's necessarily right, but it's not just a Korean problem.

Kinda related to that, I almost ran over one today.

I swear to God, this kid, about 12 or so, in a bright blue Hapkido Ki, was standing still. Then, out of nowhere he makes a running dash/jump in front of my car. He literally was trying trying to run between the moving car in front of me, and myself.

And then of course, once he was there looking at my grill, he faltered, and stopped with that glazed out over "OH $#&%^!", look in his eyes.

These kids must think life is a freaking Donkey Kong game. I cursed at him in Korean to use his %&^ing brain, and he had that look on his face (I've seen from so many Koreans, young and old, like he knew he &$%#ed up).

Lucky for the little idiot I wasn't talking on my cellphone, or watching KBS on my GPS, or he would have bean D E A D.

I got a feeling his days are numbered though anyway, since it probably won't be the last time he attempts to play "beat the cha".

Stupid is as stupid does.

Yeah you can't always fault the drivers. I do see some pedestrians who idiotically wander into traffic. Once I saw a guy standing on the road while waiting for the light to change because I guess he needs to have that fraction of second more since his time is so important. A car misses him by inches and with a shocked expression on his face he takes a step back, but still on the road. You would think one would step back on the curb after a near miss like that. I also sometimes see old people walk on the road as well.

I'd rather not have a militant police force enforcing all kinds of little laws, thanks.

I thought the same thing, until I actually started driving on the roads and started to see the accidents and the near misses. It's much worse here.
