Hi,

Have been offered a position in Dongducheon...I know nothing of the city except that it's north of Seoul, army city.

Would you recommend living and working there?

Thanks

It is a huge hooker mega-plex. Every prospective soldier goes there
before he gets shipped off to get off. Apparently all the "ladies" are from
the Philippines on "entertainment" visas.

Actually it sounds like my kinda place.

the action that trinidad speaks of is by bosan station on line 1. i think it's a pretty surreal, fun place to go. there are some great non-korean restaurants up around there too. i especially like marty's:

most of dongducheon is just a typically small korean city. i don't think i would want to live there, and that's coming from guy in uijeongbu, but i do enjoy going there a couple of times a year.

oh yeah. trinidad is right about tons of filipinas working around there, but the notion of it being "a huge hooker megaplex" may be a bit dated. 10-15 years ago it was far worse, but most of the hookers were actually korean.

It's a great place. On the subway line easy to get to Seoul. I hightly recomend it. The so called red light area is really small. You can live here for years and never notice it.

May I ask what the name of the school is. My husband has also been offered a position at the high school there. I am just wondering if this is the same school.

We turned the offer down on Monday due to reasons. Let me know and I can give you some more information.

I work in Dongducheon. Personally, I dont really like the area. It can feel a bit sketchy at night. It's full of run down abandoned buildings, hammered military and Filipino prostitutes. This is the only place in Korea, I've lived where I wouldn't walk alone at night. On the plus side, Soyosan and Dobongsan are really close, so there is lots of good hiking. The land here is cheap here so you'll probably get a good apartment. Mine is a newish 3 bedroom + balcony and there are a few good restaurants in the area.

BTW if the offer is for Dongduceon Boy's Middle School, run! I've heard about that school from other people, and the boys are impossible. The last teacher lasted a week.

HAHA! I work at the All Boys Middle school in Dongducheon! Ive been here 5 months and those little fuckers think I'm the coolest S.O.B.!

Are they impossible? It's like half and half, but it's better than a Hagwons in the fact if I don't have a class I just take off on my motorcycle to run errands or get lunch in Bosan.PS Martys is the best restuarant for food, their Hamburgers are the best in Korea!

Dongducheon does have it's perks, since it is North, your gonna get a HUGE apartment, I too have a 3 bedroom apartment with a balcony. If you come here and they give you a little studio, tell them to go *beep* themselves and get a bigger apartment. We're right on the path of subway line 1 so you can get to Seoul in a hour and half. And your close to the military base, Camp Casey, so American food and western sized clothng is easier than most of Korea.

The downside? Your not in Seoul!!! So your kinda stuck in the area until the weekend and it's not a lot of things going on during the week. Your close to the Camp Casey, the combat base, so your encounters with military guys will be occasional, some are cool, but a lot are not. The military aren't exactly recruiting the best and brightest a lot of times.

Dongducheon is SAFE! It just doesn't look that way at times. The prostitues aren't out in the open, in fact you really have to stumble on it by accident or have someone show where they are. They are hidden well.

The Dong may seem bad, but it's not, except if your looking to date korean girls, it's not here. The soldiers ruined that.

Very true about the apartment. I think we might be thinking of different schools. The one I'm thinking off has been vacant for like the past month or so. Marty's does have really good food. Their ceasar salad if awesome, there's also a subway, a kebab place, and a couple decent indian places in the area. As for the prostitues, who knows maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I see scantliy clad Filipinas everywhere, I just kind of assumed prostitute, maybe I'm wrong.

Dude, you are jumpy to conclusions. Those scantily clad Filipinos are "Juicy Girls". There like bar GO GO girls that are there to talk to GIs for 20,000 won a drink. It's a hustle but some GIs who having money to burn and lacking in brain cells pay it anyway. Most of the Philipinos are there to hopefully get a GI boyfriend to marry them as a way out of the poverty.

Some are Hot, some are not.

Spot on. Most people go there with the impression it's like Angelis city/Bangkok. Most men end up blowing all their money in one night and don't get their rocks off. It's a rip off scam that's been going on for decades. The goal of the ladies is to separate you from your cash with no boom boom. You hear the odd story of someone paying 300 ooo won other wise the girls are there just to hussle expensive drinks.

The good news in that area is pretty small. You can live in DDC for years and not even know it exists. That area is also great for getting good American style Chinese food, Kababs ,and Chilli dogs.

I am really confused now: I was also just offered a position at Dongducheon All Boys Middle School starting from ASAP. Could there be two NET's at the school? I think there is only one school according to what I have been researching.

After reading this thread, I don't exactly feel comfortable working in the town, so I may just decline the offer. As much as I want to get a job, my uneasiness conquers me on this one.

Sounds like a cool place to me although I can see blowing a lot of money on food at Marty's. That menu rocks.
