Not sure if anyone knows this show or watches it...
For the first time in my life I contemplated suicide, as the show was so awful it made me wish for another existance.
Seriously though, who goes on those shows? I remember someone from this board posted they were doing something on Ariang...if it is that show...WHY for the love of god WHY?
So there wasn't much on and I stayed on Ariang for about 15mins to check this show out.
First they match what I can only guess are two North Americans against two guys from India. The guys from India got smoked.
Then those two guys from NA that smoked the Indians, they go up against another white couple. At that point, I flick the channel. Come back 20mins later - THEY are still going at it Jeopardy wannabe style.
Just curious: There were 4 white people on that show, 3 of em were FAT. I mean it was like a thread of Dave's come to life. But that's another story.
I won't ever waste my time with that show. I don't know what's worse, those who are the contestants or those who read the questions...I think it is a tie. |

Maybe they go on the show because it is easy and they want to win the prizes. |

It's too bad that you only watched 15 minutes of that show, because it was actually Contenders history. Team Garu won their 7th episode, and won the grand prize of a trip to Europe.
KD is right that Westerners are probably mostly going on the show in hopes of winning easy prizes against hapless Koreans. Heck, I did the same thing myself and won a free trip to Japan (actually a travel gift certificate that I turned into a very cheap trip to Thailand, but that's another story). The influx of native English speakers has ended up leading to a higher level of competition on the show, however, as the shows are now increasingly native speaker vs. native speaker. The Koreans who get anywhere on the show now have to be pretty damn good. Case in point, this is the first time in over 50 episodes that anyone has gone all the way. Team Garu is also the first non-ethnic Korean team to ever win the Grand Prize.
Team Garu also reads this board (http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=15666&highlight=contenders), so I hope your comments about the weight of one of their members is something you would have felt comfortable saying to her face, because that's pretty much what you just did.
However, I'd have to say that The Contenders is probably the best show on that channel, but that's not saying much. Baek Eun Young is also just as irritating in person as she is on TV.
FWIW, in the two episodes I won, I beat other teams with native speakers, and got smoked by a pair of Kyopo grad students in my last episode. Oh, I'm also fat, in case that matters.
I had a great time on the show, and in Thailand, so I can't say I have any regrets! |

Well not sure if I would call someone fat to their face, but chances of me going to an ESL cafe meeting are zero, so what does it matter if someone who is anonymous says it?
The fat thing wasn't my point though. The show sucks arse. I guess if going on a show and looking uncomfortable and nervous to win a trip out of Korea might be appealing to some people - but watching it gives me neither a trip nor pleasure.
And if that is the best ariang has to offer, i am glad i never watch that channel |

baek eun young is one of the finest human beings I've ever known.
Her self-confidence and what she is or isn't doing about it is none of your damn business.

Why go on the Contenders? Well, I've now got about $3000 worth of free travel coming my way.
Also, people on Dave's ESL keep calling me fat, which you know, I really enjoy. My husband is glad he escaped with impunity, however. |

Why is it that, given the freedom of being able to post anonymously, so many people turn into total twunts?
Congratulations Erlyn, where are you going to go? |

You're NOT SURE if you would call someone fat to their face? Wow, how magnanimous of you! But I guess, as you said, since you're not likely to meet my wife in person (she doesn't go to ESL get-togethers either, BTW), then it's OK.
For God's sake, go back and read the thread that Son Deureo linked to -- see just what kind of reaction "anonymous" comments can provoke. How many times does it have to be pointed out that ACTUAL, REAL people read this board, and might not appreciate snide little comments such as yours?
And taking your point re: "what does it matter...?" a little further -- if we should, as you say, disregard your statement because it's anonymous, then hey! Why don't we disregard EVERYTHING you have to say on here for the same reasons? That's what I plan to do, and it's what I sure hope my wife does. |

Not sure when I have ever written that "I used to get t-shirts that fit, but my gut has ..." if I had written it I must have been drunk, cause there is no way I could buy T-shirts in Korea - not because of my gut, but because i have broad shoulders and a wide chest area.
If you would have stayed anonymous, who would know it was YOU we were calling fat? I made a comment that 3/4 of the people I saw on the contenders were fat. Not a direction at you specifically (like Tokki did in his post).
Read what I originally wrote:

There have been numerous threads on fat North Americans and eating style etc on this forum...I was alluding to that.
I read what you said on the other thread...well sorry if you take things personally. I really wasn't pointing to YOU specificially. I was commenting on how the general consensus that a lot of foreigners over here are indeed FAT.

"the fat girl" |
I am a bit of a sh*t, I won't deny it. I say what I think. What I think is the show the contenders SUCKS and 3/4 of the white contenders were fat. Am I wrong?
Hope you guys will cool it. I directed NO personal insults, just observations. |

I don't expect everyone to read my opinions. Pick and choose what you want to read. However I should have the right, as everyone else does on this forum to express those opinions. I didn't PERSONALLY insult you or your wife. I made observations. If you guys are so insure about the weight problem, do something about it. Seriously, i post a lot in the fitness thread in general discussions. I had gained quite a bit of weight and got off my ass and did something about it. If it is a problem that you have to think I am "attacking" you on this message board while making an observation, then that problem lies with you guys not me. |

Is that the small framed Korean woman that reads the questions?
What's wrong with her?
I'd have no problem with tossing her a million for a couple of hours.
her?

I don't see anything wrong with her either, but if you're saving up for some Arirang ho^H^H^Htalent, I'd recommend starting with Son Jung-min and working your way through the news anchors/reporters, providing Ms. Son doesn't blow your budget. |
