Right, I'm starting to get all my documents together for applying to some schools in Korea. How do I go about getting a criminal records check in the UK and what is the deal with apostillization(sp)? Im sure this question has been asked a thousand times before, so for that I apologise (the search function doesnt work for me!) Cheers |

If your from England you wanna head here:
http://www.met.police.uk/links/index.htm
Click on the area that suits you then find the subject access for on that site... so for example on the S Yorkshire police site it were here:
http://www.southyorks.police.uk/requestinginformation/subjectaccess
Then click on 'Download a pdf copy of the subject access form request to print off and complete.'
Print, fill in, send off.
Make sure you put your full name on the form (the same name that is on your transcripts and passport... i forgot my middle name!) and bobs your uncle.
I aint got mine apostled yet so cant help you there... there will be lots of info out there however.
If your not from England then I hope atleast someone from England reads this and finds it useful
EDIT: Erm... so you are from the UK... i must have read it then forgot as i started writing the message :p *pulls his head out of his backside* |

Re: Chrisguy's post, the local police criminal record check is available throughout the UK via any police force. It states on various police forces' sites that it can take up to 40 days (from what I can see it takes a lot less time than this). It'll cost you 10.
The Basic Disclosure is the UK wide criminal record check. They try and send out your check within 14 days. It costs 23 or so.
Both are acceptable for applying.
Re: apostille. You can get this done by any notary public (all solicitors in Scotland are technically notary publics. Most law firms have notary publics in England, Wales and N. Ireland). If you go down the Basic Disclosure route, I've heard (though not sure if this is true) that you can ring up the department once you've filled out the form and request that the form be apostilled by the head of the Basic Disclosure dept. This will save some time and some money (you should pay no more than 10 to have your criminal record check apostilled). |

I always request a Subject Access check from my local police. It usually arrives in less than 2 weeks. Costs 10 pounds.
I think this year the police procedure has changed for Requests for Information. Before, when I requested a Subject Access, my local police provided me with a local check; while the important one needed by Korean Immigration had to be forwarded down to the Met so they could search the National Police Computer.
Now, my local police can process both requests so the time waiting is much less.
I don't know if the above is the same for other parts of the UK as I live in Scotland.
Also, the Subject Access check does not to be notarized before being apostilled.
I believe the Basic Disclosure check needs to be notarized before being apostilled. |

You can get it attested to by the British Embassy in Seoul. You can walk in and out in 30 mins. Think it costs around 56,000 won.
Attestation is accepted by Korean Immigration. |
