People need to wake up and realize that race is not important, but the person is.
First, you have the idiot in Louisiana who wouldn't marry the mixed couple because of concern for future children..... (ya, sure, right, we believe that, because people can't have children without being married, right?)
Now we have this. A mixed girl (Hawaiian of Italian and Chamorro) won the beauty contest at a "black" university. I don't like racial exclusive things to begin with, but this isn't one of those. But there are saying that she shouldn't be allowed to win. Now, she is pretty, and so are some of the other contestants. But that is not the only thing. She also "reportedly built her win on the platform of mentoring girls ages 1114 on topics including 'self-esteem, body image, teenage pregnancies and nutrition.'"
There are people actually saying that the only reason she won is because she is white. People need to realize the shade of your skin is not important. Yes, it was a beauty contest, so the outside is important, but color is not a factor in beauty. |

Race is important, just not in the way most people think. |

Yes, there are racial differences, and race can be a survival factor depending on where you live. That is true.
But when it comes to interacting in the "modern" world, race should not be a factor. |

Sure it should. I also don't quite think you know what I meant. |

Why shouldn't she have won? She's a student at that university and the selection isn't some mysterious directive from the administration, correct? The student body seems to be happy selecting someone who has both White and non-White (aka Guamanian or Chamorro) heritage. |

So, they don't want her to win because she's 'white'? Hm. That's quite the double standard. I gotta say, they sound quite like their white counterparts complaining about someone winning just because they're black.
That being said, a contest is a contest. I'm almost certain that even if there wasn't a factor and she was black, there'd still be something else to complain about. She's not smart enough, she's too fat, she's a bitch, I was supposed to win, etc.
You can never make everyone happy, unfortunately. |

It's actually some of the students who are saying that she shouldn't have won. From what I can tell, the winner isn't chosen by popular vote, it's chosen just like most other beauty pagents, by a panel of judges. I do not know if the judges were white or black.
The students who are complaining aren't saying that the others were better or more deserving, they are just saying that she shouldn't win because she's not black.
The scary part is it's not old, back-in-the-stone-age, uneducated fools saying this crap, but college-educated people. |

I did a survey while I was a university student just a few years ago in California. The issue was "Is the United States Armed Forces requirement for military members to get permission to marry foreign nationals racist?" Mind you, this regulation, although it applies to all US military in Asia, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere, is only enforced, for the most part, in Asia and that usually just for "inter-racial" couples. The university students responding to the survey said, "No, it's not racist. It must be enforced in Asia to keep dirty women out of the country." Mind you, that's what people wrote in the remarks section of the survey.
We also have a judicial official refusing to grant marriage licences to "inter-racial" couples.
We also have well-educated people saying "The robin doesn't mate with the bluejay."
No, I'm not surprised. Disgusted, but not surprised. |

maybe, but also not surprised. Surprising would be honestly becoming commonplace in the South. |

well, a "white" student union would either be considered racists, or it would actually be racists (there's a difference between a white student union and a white-power student union)
same thing with beauty contests, you have miss black america, miss asian america, miss latin america... but no miss white america
but as for the asian student union.. that's surprising, unless your uni just didn't have a large enough asian population
my personal feelings on the things, that seperate but equal crap didn't work before, and it doesn't work now. how can you have a meshing of the races where racism won't be such a problem when certain things make so much effort to keep themselves apart.
like the latest genius... black spring break? that was a horrible event, and what did it serve, nothing? |

Black spring break? I've never heard of that. Do you mean the cities that put on events for AA students? |

Wow, I am surprised. Now, I could understand comments like the women are just trying to get green cards, or something like that. But "dirty women?" Stupid people make my brain hurt..... |
