This is Korea, common sense doesn't work here.
I'm worried about school closing for weeks at a time. I don't want my winter vacation to be cancelled.

A kid at my friend's school died yesterday. He had lukemia and caught swine flu and it killed him

So true, especially when you can tell the kid is sick and tell them to go to office or go home and they keep saying no because their parents are forcing them to come regardless if they are spreading something that shouldn't be spread.

EDIT: And I forgot that us foreigners will probably get blamed for it too ^.^

I'm not doubting anyone who says the kids at their school have swine flu, I'm just honestly curious. How is your school distinguishing between the two?

Hospital tests confirm. My school (of 950) had 60 away today with "flu-like symptoms." 6 confirmed so far with swine flu but the number is undoubtedly higher.

Its virulent yes -- spreads easily & didnt the WHO say 30% are probable to catch it? Otherwise its a relatively mild flu. All flu's every year kill a vulnerable percentage.

The deeper panic over this strain was that it could mutate at some point into something worse. Might be something to be said for catching the lighter strain & gaining immunity. Or its all just a bogus worry.

Anyway, the issue is way overheated.

Illogical reactions based on fear, not an understanding of science (epidemiology) serve no purpose other to brand some as scapegoats. These reactions may actually be counter productive and help to spread the virus. Certainly, K-ulture doesn't help - "Cover your effin' mouth if you're going to sneeze in my face."

One must remember... we're dealing with a population the vast majority of who believe in fan death.

There is no way to predict how it will mutate... thus, who is presently carrying the 'broken genes' that will provide immunity when it happens.

				| I am off school with possible swine flu. Anyone out there with the same thing. I would like to compare notes. I showed no fever at all for first two days and no cough, then when I got to the hospital I had a temperature of 38. It seems that relying on temperature to diagnose swine flu may not be such a good idea.
By the way I was charged 55,000 won for Tamiflu, is this the going rate?

				| i was off with possible swine flu, now confirmed that i have it. sent to the hospital with a 37.7 fever. went up to 39 at the hospital.
just felt like a bug, really. i had mild fever, chills, and a dry cough for the first two days.
started tamiflu and some other meds on monday and have been fine since. quarantined in my apartment till next monday, when i can finally go back to school. so far one other teacher is quarantined, not sure how many students have it. but very likely that other teachers will get it just from hanging out with each other. its kind of scary how fast this thing is spreading.

				| I caught swine flu from my co-worker who coughed without covering. I showed my first symptom on the 25th of oct. On mon, oct 26th, I went to the hospital and my first test was positive. i had to take a confirmation test but the results wouldn;t be ready for 2 days. In the meantime, I was given tylenol and other meds, not tamiflu. today, I got my confirmation positive result and was given tamiflu.
The sunday that I first showed symptoms, I was miserable. Achy, headache, dizzy. But it lasted for only a night. the next monday, when i went to the hospital, I was actually feeling pretty good. so now, 3 days later, I've got a pack of tamiflu but I'm not sure If I should be taking it. The CDC back in the west say that for mild/moderate cases of swine flu, tamiflu isn't the best course of action.

 Where do you work?

On average, there are 4-10 students missing in each of my classes. There are 200+ students absent each day, and it's only getting worse. In some 3rd grade classes, nearly half the class is absent. The principal will not close the school. Instead, he's making classes 5 minutes shorter so school finishes 30 minutes early.

				| I work in Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. It's a bit of a backwoods kind of place, so I don't think the people who live here get out much. So that's probably why. I'm sure it's just a matter of time though.
If it does come to my school you can bet I'll probably be the one who gets blamed for it.

				| My school doesn't seem to make sense.
Work in a kindergarten/elementary hagwon. News today is a couple kindy kids got it. We stayed open today despite pressure to close. Of course, I only found out kids were infected via another foreign teacher who only knows because she speaks fluent Korean.

The other foreign teachers and I taught all the kindy kids in the school while the Korean teachers spent an hour and a half in a meeting deciding what to do.

The decision was to stay open today but to close for the rest of the week (2 days).
However, I and another foreign teacher still have to come in to teach the elementary hagwon kids in the afternoon.
We all know how dirty kindy kids are. I won't lie, though I'm far from a germophobe normally, I was being ultra-cautious today. I even went out during lunch and got a mask. I also went out and bought myself a new bottle of sanitizer. My school has started to provide it, but only to the Korean teachers/their classrooms. No sanitizer for foreign teachers. I buy my own. Of course, the school doesn't have hot water or liquid soap either (just some gnarly old bars).

I made all the kids use hand sanitizer. I only had to coax one kid into it; ironically she's the one who I occasionally catch muttering in Korean about the waygookin carry "seu-wi-neu in-peu-lu-en-ja" (swine flu).

 I'm not taking any chances.

I'm still bummed I just gotta come in for an hour tomorrow and 3 on friday.

I wonder, to the people who did catch it - was the first symptom fever? Or was it aches? I am confused as I heard you must have the highish fever first.
If it is the fever does that mean really hot head or ... how do you tell?
