So despite Daegu being in my name, it turns out I'm moving to Daejeon instead. From searches I've read that it's kind of a boring city, I've also heard that Seoul is 50 minutes away which sounds good. So does anyone else have some good input regarding the city? I read that it's easy to make friends there, which is great for me because I'm kind of a shy and awkward guy. |

I used to live in Daejeon - its not a bad place. Its smaller than Daegu (obviously) and you won't have the Holy Grill -- in fact you will have very little if any selection of American foods, but there is a Costco. The best places to go out are in Timeworld, where you can find foreigners at the GS25, Lucky Strike, Bon Bon, or Sponge. Or downtown at Brickhouse, JRock, or Omega. Do you know what area you are living in yet? |

What conbon78 said and I'd also like to add Santa Claus pub in Kung-dong. The owner is very foreigner friendly and they cook up some great food (BACON N' EGGS!).
If you're looking for a cafe style social club where you can meet koreans and native english speakers you can try Talkholic in the Time World area. |

50 minutes away! You must be dreaming. I would say 3 hours. You
definately won't be dropping into the Wolfhound Pub in Itaewon for a
pint on Sunday afternoon and then be back in Daejon in 50 minutes.
50 minutes gets you to Incheon, which is right next to Seoul. Should
have checked the venerable Cohiba's Rule before you got taken in.
Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell Cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things. Also clubs such
as photography, drama, public speaking, sailing are 99% in
the capital city. If you want to experiment with a very Korean
culture, which unfortunately means "closed", then choose the
countryside. If you want to make money and have the lifestyle
choices similar to a western country, then there is no other
choice than Seoul.
The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live near Seoul where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

I used to live between Daegu & Daejeon, & I preferred weekend jaunts to Daejeon. It has a TGIF, & KTX links to Seoul & Mokpo (for the Jejudo fast catamaran, taking around 3 hours), & Gwangju. Also good for daytrips/weekends to Beopjusa, Danyang, Gapsa, Jikjisa, Maisan & Jirisan.

Wrong. The KTX does the trip in 1 hour. I caught the 5:29 pm train from Daejeon last Chuseok, & was at Seoul Station before 6:30 pm. This website quotes 57 minutes:

The KTX takes about 55 minutes for Daejeon to Seoul, so yeah, it's more than possible. Who knows how long the commute to Daejeon Station is from the OP's apartment, but it's more than reasonable to say the train itself, as well as a quick cab from Seoul Station, will take less than an hour and a half to Itaewon. |

Quicker & easier to just walk out of Seoul KTX station, & down into the subway for line 4, & change at Samgakji, for line 6, for Itaewon. I've actually gotten off a bus in central Seoul stalled in gridlock peak hour traffic, and switched to the adjacent subway. But yeah, you're right. 50-57 minutes for the KTX from Daejeon is correct. It's certainly not 3 hours. |

Factor in the waits and distances for each line at both Seoul and Samgakji, and I'm going to have to disagree. I've lived within a reasonable distance of both areas and unless something unusual happens, a cab will get you there in about ten minutes. |

I've waited up to 40 minutes in a long queue for a taxi, outside Seoul Station, but agreed, unless it's peak hour, taxi is usually faster than the subway. |

I though also that Daejeon would be dull.
In fact it's HUGE and has lots of cool stuff. I was so surprised. Even has a subway line.
1st weekend I went the Soedaejeon subways stop and there's large outdoor shopping and restaurants area, a cinema, dept stores etc.
There's also a really cool area called 'Timeworld.' You could just as well be in downtown Sinchon or Apgujeon. Glitzty dept stores, a few bars and clubs frequented by foriegners restaurants, cinemas etc...
Pm me if you want to go for beer sometime, if you want. |

Hey...
Live in Daejeon and LOVE it...
It's true that Seoul's a bigger city and has more things there... but you can get anywhere in Korea relatively quickly and easily from Daejeon. Seoul is 50 minutes via KTX (that's to Seoul station... then another 20 minutes or so on the subway if you're going to Itaewon). If you're used to travelling light, you can take a backpack with a change of clothes with you... hop up to Seoul for the weekend.. stay at a jimjilbang for less than $10 for the night and come back to Daejeon a day or two later...
You're also only 2 hours from Busan (beach)...
plus there's a great group of ex-pats here... pretty much something for everyone. |

Yeah... definitely go to TimeWorld...
If you don't know that area... when you get to the Galleria (which is the actual "TimeWorld" building walk between it and the building with the giant digital clock at the top (if you're coming on the subway, just take the City Hall stop... walk down the block past City Hall and keep walking straight down that road several blocks).
About 1 block past the galleria, turn left (you'll see the crowds)... approximately 1 block you'll see "Sponge" (2nd floor) on the left... that's one of the main western bars there... also down that same strip you'll see Ethnic (kinda adobe looking entrance) on the right... that's a hooka bar... there's Lucky Strike (western theme)... BonBon (italian)... just a whole bunch of other places there too but those are some of the main foreigner hangouts.
Things don't normally get to going good til about midnight or so... |
