My winter break is coming and I'll have between 2-3 weeks off.

I would like to take a vacation (most likely alone) but have no idea where to go.

What places would anyone recommend for winter vacation?

I'm not much of a beach person so a sandy gettaway is low on the priority list.

I do like active night life scenes.

I'd recommend Sydney.

Yes its a fairly long flight, but there's not much time difference so no Jet-lag. Interesting place. Hot summer sun. Good nightlife.

p.s. Ive never been there by the way, its just that's what i'd do if i had your time off.

backpack the Chiang Mai-Vientiane-Mekong River-Phenom Phen-Ho Chi Minh City route

2 or 3 days in each of Northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam - for a fraction of the cost of a trip to Australia

That's what I'm doing for winter break.

It'll be nice to escape the cold, and even nicer to be able to speak English everywhere.

I would like to fly to Sydney as well. Have you booked your flight yet?

If so, would you mind saying how much it is costing you?

I booked my flight last weekend and it was 1.4 million rt. It's gone up in price a lot since last month but it'll be worth it.

Wow, that could get you return airfare to Thailand and 30,000 baht in your pocket for cheap overland travel to beaches, islands, mountains, jungles, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam.

How much are you budgeting for your Australia trip? 3 mill?

Well once I'm there I'm staying with a friend for free so I won't have to worry about accomodations. But I'm diving with great white sharks too, so the trip will be around 3 mill.

I second Bali. It's lovely. Not just a beach and surfer scene, but also a flourishing arts, food, and nature scene like nothing other. Stunning.

Try China Air for cheap flights to Australia. They fly Seoul > Taipei > Brisbane & Sydney.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high about travelling anywhere outside Korea in January. Gepik just cancelled a school excursion for foreign teachers within Korea, because of the current paronoia on swine flu. Both your coteacher & Principal have to approve your leaving Korea, btw.

not unless you don't tell them. Just get your vacation time and enjoy. I'm heading back to Canada for my vacation and they told me to come back one week earlier because of the swine flu BS (even though it is already so "bad" in Korea) I just smiled and nodded. Less they know about what you do the better.

Hear Hear. Especially when home is summertime in the K winter, clean sandy beaches with nobody on them, no ripoffs, no touts, good food, no crowds, vacationing at home has never been so much fun.
