The Department of Justice had already been looking into companies that received earmarks from subcommittee chairman Rep. John Murtha (D., Pa.).

The new document, which was prepared by the Ethics Committee in July and viewed by the Washington Post this month, suggests that the ethics panel is looking into the activities of more lawmakers than previously thought, including Reps. Peter Visclosky (D., Ind.), James Moran (D., Va.), Norm Dicks (D., Wash.), Marcy Kaptur (D., Ohio), C.W. Bill Young (R., Fla.) and Todd Tiahrt (R., Kan.).

5 Democrats in that list. What about "change"? What happened to those tough speeches by Obama on fighting Earmarking and changing Capitol Hill?

What would you call the ethics pannel probing these lawmakers if not a step towards getting tougher on earmarks? In your partisan haste to condemn, you seem to be ignoring that.

These "Holier than thou" Democrats should have never had these earmarks in the first place.

Why? Did these specific Democrats run on platforms involving cracking down on earmarks? Probably not. And remember, unlike Republicans, Democrats generally don't run on anti-governmental spending platforms, so earmarks aren't even particularly hypocritical for a Democrat to engage in. A Republican who runs on an anti-governmental spending platform and then earmarks money for his district is being at least somewhat hypocritical. A Democrat who runs on a govenrmental spending platform and then earmarks money for his district is not.

Of course, if you have any links to data about any of these Democrats campaigning on an anti-earmarking platform, then I'd certainly agree they were being hypocrites. Do you have such data?

What speeches? I thought McCain was the anti-earmark candidate? (I could be wrong, my memory is a bit hazy on this)

This issue is not about "earmarks" per se, nor is it about any one political party. It is about ethics. Essentially a few individuals were caught trading earmarks for campaign contributions - a form a bribery.

Whether or not you are for or against earmarks, whether you support Ds, Rs, independents or some other party, if these pols are guilty they are crooks.

Although we may disagree on issues, there are honest individuals in every party who don't loot the government to line their pockets.

WSJ wrote:
The document indicates the House Ethics Committee is looking into whether the lawmakers on the defense-spending subpanel of the House Appropriations Committee ran afoul of House rules by trading earmarks for campaign contributions, according to the newspaper.
