http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8334810.stm

While Korea's getting more astringent on foreigners (or is it just teachers?) entering the country, the US is about to lift their ban on HIV. (I'm kinda doubting a ton of hiv pos ppl are going to be flooding into america now, though...)

According to the article - "Mr Obama added: 'It will also take an effort to end the stigma that has stopped people from getting tested, that has stopped people from facing their own illness and that has sped the spread of this disease for far too long.'"

Why can't they just treat HIV like a disease rather than a human rights issue.

Because, they believe, it primarily has to do with discrimination against homosexuals. I await the day the left denounces it entirely as a malicious, right-wing socially-constructed thing. Modify, humanize the discourse, and that will modify and humanize this so-called disease. There is no there there, man...

Have you not read the stuff on disability indentity politics?

Stigma. "People" don't get tested because they aren't at risk. At risk people don't get tested because they don't care about their health, which is why they are at risk.

Finally.

Until today's announcement, the U.S. was one of only 7 countries with laws that bar entry of people with HIV, the group noted.

I couldn't agree more. Treat them at medical institutions, not stop them at the border.

Interesting allegation. Is this disease the incurable, highly-contagious ["it can infect any of us!" etc.], life-threatening disease the medical community has told us it is or not?

We do not have this kind of money, to finance apparently unlimited foreign hiv cases, including treatment and drugs, Kuros.

I said nothing about the US paying for their treatment, Gopher. In fact, I'm rather fond of the idea of financially-healthy HIV patients entering the US to spend their money on treatment.

HIV/AIDS patients should be quarantined. What is AIDS? and infectious, often fatal disease.

That to me fits the definition of something that should result in quarantines.

This is all because of that stupid Real World guy who had AIDS. People get all emotional about the issue and don't think.

"Why does AIDS continue to infect people?" Uhh maybe its because you haven't quarantined them???

And all FTs who gripe about AIDS testing can go take a hike.

Its only infectious through sexual contact or through sharing hypodermic needles.

Ignorance is far more infectious than HIV.

Many of them, Kuros, will be entering from Haiti.

And how many of those people are going to stop having sex or using IV drugs because they found out they have AIDS? Human behavior

I know from personal experience a coworker who continued to be sexually active and not tell his partners even though he knew he had the disease.

So your take-away from this anecdote is what, people should be denied entrance to the United States solely for having HIV?

I'm not sure what that story actually means. Is it

A) A person satisfying all other criteria to enter under whatever visa they apply for, will not be denied because they are HIV positive.

or

B) All HIV patients are allowed in.

A seems reasonable whereas B doesn't.
