I lost my iPhone 3G on a taxi tonight. I'm beside myself.
Is there any way to get it back? I don't know the guy driving, and I don't have the license plate, or even the company. It was a white car, from what I remember.
What can I do? |

Your I-phone is probably gone forever unfortunately. Taxi drivers in
this country are the worst rogues going. Many of them are ex-crims who
cant get any other kind of job. I lost my wallet recently in a taxi here in
Yongin, I knew what the cab company's name was but despite a lot of
help from Korean friends to track it down, nothing was ever found.
What were u doing with an I-Phone here anyway?? I wasn't aware they
even worked over here?!

If you paid with a Tmoney card, and still have your reciept - the taxi driver's id number will be on it. Otherwise, you might want to try calling the phone. They will usually bring it back to you for a fee. You'd want to get a Korean to negotiate that for you.
Good luck. |

I got one (1st gen) and it still works as an iPod Touch. The 3G iPhone will work in roaming mode with a non-Korean SIM installed. With Skype and WiFi you could also make calls. So, not a total waste.
Not sure if you're accurate with your description of taxi drivers, I have yet to have a bad experience after 2 years and I use taxis quite often, including going to and returning from places of ill repute such as Itaewon. Your 2nd and 3rd sentence is exactly how the Anti-English Spectrum describes ESL teachers here Maybe ET's should be allowed to moonlight as cabbies?
To the OP, try calling your own phone but my guess is that if the cab driver didn't keep it, the next passenger most likely did. |

I should have mentioned that it wasn't being used as a phone, but basically as an iPod touch. I think I'm going to have to pick up an iPod touch to replace it.
I've tried using the Locate my iPhone feature, but I had GPS and WiFi disabled when I had it last, so I doubt I'll see it again.

Yeah for realz.
Seriously, I heard that Korea was incredibly good at returning lost property. And I've heard amazing stories of people going from Seoul to Busan returning lost wallets to weigooks.
But the cab drivers are notorious for taking lost cellphones and selling them off... (Where do you think all those used cell phones at display in the LG, KT, and SK stores come from?)
Actually I had my very first and expensive phone lost in a taxi. The cab driver didn't return it even despite hammering it with Korean messages. A few Korean friends told me not to expect it to come back, because cab drivers are D-Bags. Although frankly I've had some interesting and great cab drivers, that night the cab driver in question was a total ass munch, and I could tell.
Well good luck man, hope you lucked out with a good cab driver, you never know. Sometimes people will surpise you with their kindness and goodwill |

You obviously have never caught a cab here in Yongin!.....lol
Yes....I admit I was way over generalizing but nevertheless its true that
a good percentage of taxi-drivers in Korea ARE ex-crims. If Anti-
English spectrum are claiming that many of us (EFL teachers) are ex-
crims then thats just downright false.
I take taxis almost every (working) day and I've had so many arguments
and fights (including one time the police were called!) with dishonest and
rude taxi-drivers that I've lost count over the years.
Maybe ET's should be allowed to work as cabbies??........Well, they couldnt
do a worse job than some of the ass-clowns who work as cabbies in this
country do now!!....lol.

Guess what.
My friend from Cheonggu, whom I posted an awkward date thread about q couple of months ago, appeared here in Seoul today.
The cabbie called her when he found her number on mu phone. She came last night, stayed here with her friend over night, met the driver this morning, and brought me the phone today. I seriously thought it was a dream.
So chalk one up for nice people. I'm going to write a letter to the cab company. I couldn't be happier. |

That's good to hear man, glad you got it back. Usually the cab drivers ask for a small compensation reward for taking the time to go meet the person. Make sure your friend didn't pay him for his time, if so, I'd make sure to compensate your friend. All cab drivers aren't that bad, eh? |

You should definitely write a letter of praise! I had a bus driver once return my phone and I regret not doing that myself. |

Good to hear that theres one good apple amongst all the rotten ones out
there.
Do the right thing and write a thank you letter like the previous poster
suggested.

Money speaks louder than words in situations like this.
Give the man a reward, he deserves it... and probably needs it. |

Look at what you typed and figure it out. Not Much!
I think there are only a handful of white cars here though
You got real lucky though getting it back
I like how people bash the cab drivers in the place they are living. Like the ones back home are any more honest. If you were in another city/country, youd be saying the same things.
I dont think too many cabbies back home have much of a clean background either. I wouldnt trust many of them thats for sure. Ex-criminals or illegals for the most part. Sometimes you find good ones, sometimes bad ones. No matter WHAT country youre in its the SAME! |
