| One of my personal favorites is from Bicentennial Man where the cyborg dies just before he is finally officially pronounced human. Very sad movie, one of Robin Williams's best. |

The scene from Se7en (The "Sloth" scene) where they find the guy in the bed who looks like he's dead and then he starts coughing trying to communicate:

I guess this qualifies more as an 'act' than than a scene, but here it goes:
Casablanca- the whole sequence at Rick's starting with Yvonne and the German soldier and Captain Renault's and Rick's observations of things progressing to the scene with Annina and Rick and the dialogue there, then the Roulette scene, Ilsa and Laszlo's entrance, the discussion between Rick and Laszlo, then the "La Marseilles" (during which Ingrid Bergman gives one of the great screen moments of expression while watching Laszlo lead the cafe in song) and the great line "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"
EDIT- Tell me there isn't a finer 3 minutes in film than this part of that scene- cliche now? yes. But its still one of the finest 3 minutes in film.

I gotta add A Raisin in the Sun Act II, Scene 1 (The film is nearly identical to the play in this regard) beginning with Beneatha 'going traditional' and Walter Lee coming in all drunk and joining in while Ruth just sighs at them. Then Walter Lee and George Murchison go at it, followed by Mama coming in and announcing that she's bought the house and Ruth's "I sure don't feel like whipping nobody today"
Also the end is great where Walter Lee finally mans up and tells Lindner (Porky Pig) that yes, the family WILL be moving into Clybourne Park.

Full Metal Jacket - Stanley Kubrick, based on the book Short Timers
The final scene - troops singing Mickey Mouse

Love this film, but young troops in the military don't seem to get that this is an anti war film...and it's become a fan favourite for Army troops every where. Too bad these things are happening all over again in Iraq and the message of this film (and many other great war films) has been largely misunderstood as entertainment.
Thanks to this scene:

Drill sergeants everywhere quote this man (a real life drill sergeant) every year on basic training courses around the US and Canada. A great scene as well, but unfortunately it seems to be over rated and misunderstood by the general population. |

"We train young men to drop fire on people but their commanders won't allow them to write f@#k on their aeroplane because it's obscene. The horror, the horror." |

I think they know. They just don't care.
After all, potheads the world over love Reefer Madness. You think they don't know it's an anti-pot movie? |

The opening car murder scene in Zodiac, to the song "Hurdy Gurdy Man". The slow motion blood spatter of the cute blood girl taking the hits... David Fincher, you're a genius:

Many don't...they never thought enough about the movie to see it that way. I'm sure a lot don't care either, but it was scary talking to my young troops to find they really never got it...troops we trusted to carry around machine guns and automatic rifles. |

| I always liked the first several minutes of 2001 Space Odyssey. No speaking, just that chimp slowly realizing that a bone in his hand is a powerful weapon. And of course the buzzing sound and Richard Stauss' music in the background. |

Full Metal Jacket- totally slipped my mind.
R. Lee Ermy was brilliant as the drill sargeant. He wasn't acting because he was a drill sargeant.
The beginning scene where he's verbally abusing his platoon is great.
Really, the scene where Joker finds Pyle in the bathroom with a loaded rifle is so intense.
Can't believe anyone would watch this movie and think war or being in the military is cool! |
