| Loving it too. Finally in the 64-bit world where I can use all of my 4GB. Honestly though, I don't see a huge difference between Vista Ultimate in terms of speed. Not complaining though. |

Don't even bother with Vista. It's almost 99% as fast as XP, in my book. There are some odd little quirks here and there, but it's really great so far. |
100% agree. Little quirks that bother me: the quick launch toolbar keeps disappearing after restarts (only sometimes) and I have to put it back. There's not "Cut Delete Paste" buttons at the top of explorer windows. Still can't find a compatible driver for some stuff (reasonable since it just came out).
Was talking to some students today who are system engineers, and they love it. Apparently Korean Vista was even worse than the English version. |

Vista is as fast as Windows 7, has a few odd quirks, but its been really great for 2 years.
I am not knocking 7, but Vista was seriously given the shaft. At least, the positive experiences with the OS, which were many, never seemed to be heard. I mean, there are a number of people on this forum alone who had great experiences with Vista.
Though I will make the move eventually because I want the latest, with Vista SP2, there is no compelling reason to do so hastily.
Windows 7 has a marginally faster boot, some kitschy GUI distractions and a somewhat better power/memory management system (though my Vista install has never used more than 60% of my 4GB), but none of these are deal breakers. DX11, as DX10 was with Vista, is still a way off from being the norm. Read some reviews; Win7 gets accolades for the things I mentioned above, but when it comes to benching and real-world situations, there is little to talk about. A few extra frames may result from the memory handler, but nothing that a mild overclock or some deeper tweaking wouldn't also provide. |

It's now in the drop down menu under organise. But who uses it anyway, right click or ctrl c.
have no idea about the quick launch, mine never moves. Must be one of your settings somewhere |

True, but I want the buttons, dammit!
Quick launch is a known problem apparently caused by registry rewrites and such. Since I do a lot of tweaking and installs/testing, it changes often for me. I just CNTRL ALT DEL, shut down explorer, restart it, and it comes back. A quirk more than a fault but kind of annoying. |

I find Windows 7 is far snappier, demo. That's what I've noticed in terms of speed. As far as game framerates and whatnot, I can't comment.
It's not faster than XP at surfing. They're about equal.
I like the additional changes to the Microsoft Updates section. One thing I've absolutely HATED about my wife's Vista 64 is how many troubles we encounter with updates that don't work clogging up the pipeline. We've had this happen 3 times in 3 months, and the updates quit working when it happens.
It's even worse to figure this mess out when it's in Korean. |

| I managed to "acquire" the Windows 7 RTM version ahead of schedule, and i'll have to say (as an Apple fan) that this is Windows best OS. Nevermind that it looks like OS X, it's just a far more stable, and nimbler Windows OS. I noticed there still are issues with driver and software compatibility - not to mention games but i'm sure that will be fixed in updates. |

Interesting about the update thing...I never noticed that behavior on my system. Anyhow, I heard to OS generally was more responsive; that seems to be the starting point of most reviews. Looking at the benchmarks are less convincing that much more than optimization has happened with Windows 7; an evolution of Vista.
Glad you are enjoying anyhow...brave to install mid-semester. I could never do such a thing; far too much riding on a functional system. |

Still have the notebook I was using. Really wanted to sell it, but the fan developed a small noise (not always) and I can't sell a machine when it's got problems. Can use my wife's machine in a pinch, as well. |

| Thanks for the links bassexpander. They'll come in handy. I downloaded the Digital River offering, and thinking I was getting an ISO...boy was I wrong. It's good to know there are workarounds. |

I read that Digital River is now providing an ISO.
Bet the ISO doesn't work on a new install on a machine with no windows, though!
I think MS has worked to close that loophole this week, and told DR they don't want people doing this.
In any case, what one can do is install a copy of XP using a cracked code, but don't activate it, then go through the USB key install. |

| Interesting...I better get installing as soon as we get our notebook. I've purchased the 32 bit version...will keep you all posted on what happens. I hope I can still install the full version. |

| x64 is the only way to go, really. Win 7 should have been x64 only, IMO. |

| Yeah, I was pretty shocked that they made a 32-bit version. |
