bass...in the buy/sell forum, you said your RAM use never goes above 35%. This is the same as my Vista machine and so I am wondering what programs you have running in the background. Other than services, of course.
Win7 was supposed to be so much easier on system memory than Vista, but we both have 4GB and seem to be using the same amount of RAM. |

Have had several issues today... not sure if it's something I did or what.
I was trying to get a new external HDD to work (it was a notebook 320gb drive) and it just wouldn't fire up. It just kept clicking and trying, but no go 90% of the time. I did a search online and found that others with P55 boards (not just Asrock) are having similar issues. Hmmm....
My wife's 120gb external will fire up just fine. I read an article online that says USB doesn't have enough juice to push many of the larger HDD's these days unless they have some form of external power source. Maybe that's my problem.
Second issue was choppy audio and stuttering. It started from coming out of sleep mode. Might have something to do with Asrock power saving features I installed (that aren't entirely approved for Win7 yet). I'll turn them off and see what happens. I've had lots of odd issues coming out of sleep in Win7 (not hibernate, though). I have a handy sleep key on my Microsoft wireless keyboard that I like to use, but sleep causes some issues, so I've got to stay away from it for now. |

Most USB drives are sold with the dual-ended cable...that is a no-go? I have a 320GB drive that works with just one. Try a new cable.
Now, if you are going to post a screenie, you should really show processes from all users. You have 63 processes running with 35% usage; your screenie only shows a handful.
The reason I ask is because it is interesting to compare your memory use with Vista, and that is interesting because I firmly believe that Vista SP2 = Windows 7 without so much makeup.
ASUS and Gigabyte are the only mainboards to buy. DFI are coming into their own, but for overall quality and stability, nothing else. ASUS recently won an award for quality and service... |

How do I post for all users? I only have one user set up for this computer.
And yeah, I tried running the external HDD using both plugs (and even a different cable). The 2nd cable worked more often, but not always. 2nd cable seems to be working fine (rear USB's only) today, with just one plug needed. When I plug both into the front USB's, it just clicks (which means it's not getting enough power).
I can run USB sticks off of the front usb's. |

| Bass - I had the same external HD problem. I plugged it into an XP machine and it worked just fine. After that, I plugged it back into the Win 7 machine and then it worked. No idea why. |

Well, now i'm having a whole host of troubles. Not sure if this is hardware or what.
I'm not a happy camper.
Sometimes it won't boot and just sits and makes one long beep. Other times, it runs, but is choppy. I think it may be a bad HDD or motherboard on the main computer.
I called the shop and they aren't even working today because their child is in the hospital. Ugh.... not a good day.
Wish I had both a new mainboard and a new HDD. |

Totally dead. Won't even post.
Something hardware-related is bad. Must be mainboard, or HDD, or probably both.
This sucks. I'm just going to tell them to RMA the drive and the mainboard. I'll try an Intel or Asus board next time. Sounds like Gigabyte is having some socket issues with i5, so afraid to go that route this time.
Hmmm.... hope they'll trade the board out for something else. |

Sounds like heat BE...a CPU cooking exhibits this behavior (Gigabyte voltage regulation problem?). Mainboards tend to just work or they don't and hard drives typically won't stop POSTing; they will fail, causing an error message, or just sit there with the head clicking away.
Good luck. |

That would be Asrock problem, not Gigabyte.
Now wish I had purchased Gigabyte!
As for the choppy sound, it was doing that from a cold start. HMmm. |

Yeah...sorry...ASrock. Choppy sound? I was referring to your mentioning that the system runs choppy...or was running choppy. An overheating CPU does just this...until it fries completely, that is. Then you arrive at where you are now.
Choppy sound usually means a bad driver, but sure....may be symptomatic of a mainboard problem. |

| Well, in any case, I'm going to hope and pray the place will be able to do an exchange to another mainboard... hard to know what all is wrong. That mainboard wasn't providing enough juice through the front USB headers anyway, which really pissed me off. |

Installed, and it's great. I used the DVD boot workaround. It's fast, stable, and so far everything has installed properly. I love the Aero shake and the windows +tab effects. A very nice OS.
Has anyone downloaded the student version of Ultimate Office? Is it worth the price, or should we just stick with our older MS Office 2000. |

I love office 2007. However it is a major change. You will probably initially hate it. The interface is completely different, but once you learn the new locations it is much quicker, esp. for everyday activities.
Don't just try it out for an hour or so, give it a week long trial (I know a good site for free software ) |
