cannot find any recent talk related to my question. hoping to find answers here to my questions. currently on E-2visa. will be leaving my hakwon soon. at that point i imagine i would need to change my work visa to tourist visa. i would also presume that this would involve myself and my boss going down to immi in person. i will be flying to states in couple weeks for holiday. then return to korea for christmas to visit friends. just want to avoid fine or any other problems i might encounter when trying to leave or re-enter the country.

Well look at your alien card - you have to be out by that date. Which means you have to leave the country by that date in order to not receive a fine. I've heard you have 30 days, but actually immigration told me that you can only come in on a tourist visa after you have left first.

i don't think there's a 30 day grace period for leaving. i was told you must be out by midnight on the date that's on your ARC.

i think you can extend your visa though for 30 days. i've extended it within the country for travel purposes, i don't think it cost anything either.

edit: here's the link for immi

http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/CvlapplInfoDetailR_en.pt?cvlapplCd=12700000095&locale=en&cvlapplGbSeq=

however, if you're heading home for a couple weeks in between working and visiting, is your contract expiring? if it is, i don't think you have anything to worry about.

thanks for the link nomad. guess that i should have clarified. actually leaving contract early. breaking it i guess you could call it. school just did not work out. not leaving on bad terms so if something has to be done in the eyes of immi then boss can help. anyway so my ARC does not expire until august.
but since i am leaving the school and new teacher is coming in to replace me i thought that my work visa had to be cancelled. new teacher will not start until next month... if that makes a difference. can i just stay on my work visa until i come back next month or do i need to change to tourist status immediately? dont know what is considered to be "illegal" by the eyes in the sky.
