Hi all,
I've used the search engine but still can't find the exact answer to this question. Anyway, I had to get an FBI check because Louisiana does not do statewide checks. I received it today and it does not have any official signature on it, just a typed "no arrest record found" and a few stamps with the date reviewed/a number. Do I now have to get this notarized, and if so how do they do this without a signature on it? Can I just take this directly to the Louisiana Sec. of State Office now and get it apostilled?
Thanks! |

Where is it from? I am guessing it came from West Virginia which means you need to get it notarized there and then get an apostille from there as well. Last I head they don't do that anymore.
Kikomom will be here soon to sort it out for you though! |

Yeah, it came from West Virginia but I'm wondering if I can get it notarized locally here and then take it to the LA Sec. State office to get it apostilled. I hate bureaucracy...what a headache. |

I had a local notary make/notarize a true copy (both sides) of the fingerprint card which had an ink stamp from the FBI on it. I was able to get the notarized true copy apostilled at the state capital.
It seemed to be acceptable as I made it over to the dark side. |

I went around and around trying to get the right answer on this one... After correspondence with the US Secretary of State, Sec of State of West Virginia, and the Sec of State of North Carolina (where I live), this is what I found out (and proceeded to do): I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not but I told the FBI when I sent in my request for my background check that I was going to needed it apostile and they provided a statement with my "no record found" sheet saying that the FBI does not provide notary/ apostile services.Anyways...West Virginia no longer will Apostile FBI checks if you do not live in West Virginia. You need to have a notary in Louisiana notarize your check and then send it to the Sec. of State. The Sec. of State of West Virginia was kind enough to provide me with the affidavit statement that I needed a notary to notarize. The statement went something like "I swear that this is a FBI criminal background check from Clarksburg, West Virginia, etc... ...I then took my background check and the statement to the UPS store and had them notarize the statement for $10. Then I sent it off to the Sec of State of NC with a cover sheet (found their website) and return postage included. I got it back in a couple of days with no problems. My documents arrived in Korea and were reviewed by EPIK with no problem.
Sorry for the long post, but I wish I had found more clear instructions while I was getting my information together! |

Thank you both! That helped a lot. I just kept calling and getting the same run around..felt like I was hitting multiple brick walls. Every notary I went to said "We can't notarize this because there is no signature and the other party is not present. Only the agent who conducted this check can do this." Which is the FBI..and they don't. Hmm. Finally I found a notary who made a copy of the check with her seal on it and a stamp that says"I hereby certify this to be a true copy of the original of this document given to me for copying and certifying on this 2nd day of November 2009" and her signature underneath. Hopefully the LA sec. of state office will accept this and apostille it. In other news...I am going to get a drink! |
