Ok, so I work at an International School and my boss came in this morning and says everyone, including teachers, need to wear a mask. Now, I'm all about safety and the school. I'm a licensed teacher and I know that safety comes first. However, I am upset for many reasons at my bossing telling me I must wear a mask. First, I don't think he can make me do this. Second, I am from Minnesota and have a strong immune system, not to mention the fact that I run at least 40 miles a week. Third, I have to pay for the masks. Fourth, if everyone in the school has to wear a mask, and it's THAT dangerous, why do we not close down and play it safe? Answer: If my boss closes the school for a few days he loses a lot of money. Now, obviously we all know how cheap bosses can be, and my boss has no heating system in my school so we are literally freezing, which makes me think there is no way bacteria can even survive here. In conclusion, I understand he has invested in us teachers and can't afford us getting sick, BUT, can he really do this? I mean, I teach and lecture from 8am to 7pm...I'm not wearing a dang mask.

Thoughts?

ps. I don't mean to rant. Just upset.

Thanks.

OP,
get someone to smack you in the back of the head several times.
Wear a mask. Change the lesson plans so that you don't have to verbal spray from 8 to 7.

I'm not looking for criticism here guys, thanks for your replies but I just want to know if my boss can make me wear a mask. If it's not helpful, please refrain.

The masks are ridiculous for the workplace. It is not possible to communicate with my students if we are wearing masks.

Never worn a mask in my life and don't plan to start. Not sure if your boss can make you but I've been thwarting my co-teacher's requests to wear one for the past week.

Better get your masks while they have them. Stock up on garlic, onions and lemons while you're at it...

I agree with the op. Masks are uncomfortable and more importantly, useless in stopping the transference of flu.
I'd just tell your boss that 'I don't want to wear one.'
Of course when the flu hits it will be your dirty waygook germs that caused it... Rolling Eyes

Everyone at my school is required to wear masks as well. Most of the time, everyone just wears them in the hallway. As soon as everyone gets into class they get pushed down under the chin or taken off. Of course, if the principal walks by, the masks go right back up. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I really appreciate the different perspectives on this issue. I really wanted to just hear if anyone else was experiencing the same thing and what their response was. By the way, I'm not trying to hint that minnesota is somehow better than elsewhere, just making making my case that I'm not a sickly individual. Thanks for the advice! I haven't decided how I'll handle this one yet. I don't really want to make any bad blood between me and my boss but if anyone knows of any more strategies I'd love to hear them.
