When playing games with groups I have each group yell their name if they know the answer. As you can imagine this causes a fair amount of chaos and often times 2 or more groups yell simultaneously.

Any novel ideas on how to assign each group a unique sound or way to 'buzz' in?

Have them decide on a team "sound" and have that be their buzzer. Maybe it's "Bzzzz" or "Honk" or something. This might not help with the chaos factor.

Maybe have team cards like at an auction and they can only officially "buzz in" if they raise their card silently.

What games are you playing? I am desperate for ideas.

You are right that you need an auditory means of doing this.

However, bells and bobbles can cause other problems.

The best way I've found is to train the students to knock. One soft knock. If it is a "rap" they get the yellow card.

But knocking works. If you have an IWB - there are several apps that allow students to stand at the screen and "buzz in".

Jeopardy right now. I have a PPT that is a pretty good template. I put the kids in 4 groups. When I ask a question they 'buzz' in with their group name.

I did try an alternative approach. Rather than have a free for all I asked each group the question. They could either answer it or pass it to a specific group. That group HAD to answer the question or would lose the points. This added a bit of strategy to whether to answer the question or pass.

While this worked great it took away a bit of the fun in the game.

Is it Dmitry's ESL template? That one is great.

My co-teachers have been insisting on teaching in the old-school classrooms with broken TVs rather than the high-teach English room. Really limits my options.

I used to use a complex series of actions...stand up, sit down...tap twice..left hand up...say the name of your team....

Or anything like that...makes it easier to tell who is first...and is fun to watch...

yeah, assign one person from each group to be the spokesman of sorts. You can do the stand up thing. Or you could have one person from each team come to the front and put an object in front of them like a stuffed animal or something and the first person to grab it gets to answer kinda thing.

hehe, yeah but you kinda have to have a sturdy object or not care if it gets ripped apart. We used this method in my korean classes and we used a stuffed frog. One of the legs got ripped off. Funny thing was, the teacher that was having us use it, it wasn't their frog. so i had to sew it back on so that they other teacher wouldn't know that we had ripped the leg off. worked though. never did find out. but i digress~

My plan is to place a tennis ball on a paper cup. Each group will have one designated signaler. First one to grab the ball gets to answer the question.

Often times I'm reading the question when the hand goes up. Even then there is the chance of a tie. As competitive as these kids are I need a clear way to identify who was 'first.'

Call on them if they raise their hand preemptively. If they answer wrong, the team loses a point.
