First, in my opinion:
TEACHING IN KOREA IS JUST A JOB LIKE ANY OTHER. YOU CAN LEAVE
ANY TIME YOU WANT FOR ANY REASON YOU WANT. IT IS NOT A
CRIMINAL OFFENCE AND YOU WILL NOT BE DETAINED AT THE AIRPORT.
I think some people get the impression, perhaps from the big deal about
getting a visa, that leaving your job is like going AWOL in the army. I
totally disagree. Your boss may want airfare or bills paid, immigration
may blacklist you, but it is just a job and you can ditch it anytime you
want.
I read in some posts that people are sneaking around like the KGB are
on their trail because they may be, or are thinking of, not completing
their contracts. It makes me laugh. |

I know I would feel some responsibility for my students, but people are counting on your in other jobs as well. I would say that how bad it is to drop any job counts on how much negative impact you have on your "employer", but I include the students as a part of the employer. If you're an awful teacher maybe you're even doing them a favour, then you shouldn't feel bad about it at all |

| If you're getting totally screwed over by your employer, the kids don't really matter all that much anymore. |

Seems to me to be a big "It depends".
At the same time, except in dire circumstances, you should either quit or get fired, not just bail. |

Except when you're working for a shady hakwan boss. You wait until payday and then you run. You do not hand in and then work a month's notice only to not be paid for that month. Happened to me once and happened to people I know many times.
Haggie - run.
PS / uni - resign. |

You gotta do what you gotta do.
I would never advise someone to stay in Korea if they are truly miserable.
That said, lots of runners aren't truly miserable.
On the other hand, it is important to remember that leaving Korea might not solve your problems. |

| I agreed with the first one. But I've always given notice when I've quit other jobs, so I would attempt to do the same here if feasible. |

| I know more crap teachers who are not mature enough to hold down a tough job, or even quit responsibly, than I know of thieving "hak"wons. That's just my experience. Foreign culture+no REAL work experience = irresponsible behavior. |

If resigning from a job makes me special, then so be it.

I totally agree that with a Hagwon there is one standard and with a public/uni another- Hagwons suck. With a public, try and go through the motions first.
Like I said, "dire circumstances" Withheld pay is "dire".
Hagwons weird me out. |

I was truly miserable. Working for free was really bad, and then when the boss revealed it was believed I wouldn't run because I had no money, that was my last straw.
I'm so glad I left. I really liked Korea, and I really liked the kids, but the management of that place was horrid.
Fortunately, I work full time in Michigan now, and I'm doing okay. But that took some time when I got back, and it wasn't pleasant at all. |

| Lets face it it. If you're being screwed by your employer, whats wrong with turning around and screwing the employer. I would walk off of my job in a second, but I have to finish the contract or else i won't be get another job with epik. I also need 5 months more of salary. |

I've known plenty of people who have gotten screwed over by their principals and/or co-teachers at a PS. Hogwans or PS - just choose your flaovor of misery. PS jobs are just like hogwans in that it really depends on your supervisor. A jackass principal is going to be no better than a jackass owner. |
