Ok, so some quick back story.
My friend teaching in Busan allegedly did something INCREDIBLY stupid, which was mail himself a box of hash cookies from the US (he's just come from home) to his school. I say allegedly, because I haven't spoken to him and don't know if he actually did it or not.
So, anyway, he was arrested in Busan, and has apparently been transfered to Incheon District Public Prosecutor's Office, Incheon Airport Branch. I'm in Seoul, so I'm hoping to visit him tomorrow.
I have 2 questions:
1) Does anyone know where this office actually is and/or a phone number? I've searched google but it doesn't bring anything up. I have the answer to the phone number now, but would still like to know about exact location if anyone knows. The airport's a damn big place)
2) Can anyone recommend an English speaking lawyer who has had experience with this kind of case before?
I know this will attract some of the usual flames so I'll answer them now. If he is guilty I'm flabbergasted by his stupidity. I imagine he's feeling that way himself too. Whether he's guilty of sending them to himself or not, I'm 100% sure he wasn't planning on dealing marijuana. He is not a bad guy. Thanks in advance.

It could in theory be a "practical joke" from his "friends" back home to send him some. While it's very unlikely that's what happened, it is a really mean thing to do to post drugs to someone in Asia.
On topic: I don't really have anything to contribute with, but I wish your friend is innocent and found not guilty. |

Is your friend the guy in your avatar?
Call 1330. That's information. |

hahaha....I hadn't thought about that one A smile is always good in these circumstances.
I did try information, but that was yesterday before I knew exactly where he was. I'll try again today if my Korean friend who's going to help me can't find anything on Naver. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for the kind words UknowsI. I guess if I get to see him today I'll find out what happened (or his version anyway). Obviously, if he is guilty, I won't be putting that in writing on a public forum. I'm hoping it was just a big mix up and he's not that dumb.
Still need a lawyer recommendation....anyone? |

I can't recommend a lawyer specifically, but I bet if you give your friend's embassy a call, they'll have a list of ones for just such a situation |

Second this.
This is one thing your embassy can help with. providing lists of lawyers (about the only thing they can help with). Don't expect any other help |

Yeah, or when your friend writes his name on a job application as:
"My Friend Teaching in Busan" everyone will know he is the druggie and
deny him the job. |

huh...? I was thinking more along the lines of if it goes to court, I don't want to be providing any evidence of his guilt. Unlikely as this is, I could be identified from this forum. As I said, I don't know yet, but from what I've read, his best bet at this point is to be deported. At this point it seems pretty unlikely that he'll ever be teaching in Korea again. |

Haha, do you mind sharing with us just how a criminal court will use
something seen on the famous Dave's ESL Cafe to convict your friend.
I can just see the prosecutor standing up to give evidence in a Korean
court with a print of this thread. "Yes, your honour, we think this poster,
Ruthdes, may be this person, [your real name]. We know this because
of rigorous supposition and guess work. She also said that the accused
may or may not be guilty. So, in light of this string of maybes on an
anonymous forum, we move to convict the prisoner." |

With some digging around you could find out who I am just by the posts on Dave's. Cookie Monster is just trying to cover all of his bases by not saying if the guy is innocent or guilty. Plausible deniability or something of the sort. |

God Trinidad, why are you being such an arsehole? As I said, it's unlikely to happen, but as oskinny1 said, it IS possible. And that's why I'm being, and will continue to be unclear. So if it DID happen, there would be nothing to use (i.e. "may or may not be guilty"...geddit? ) A search of my post history would turn up enough info about me to identify me to an interested party. I don't think that anyone on his end would search Dave's, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that someone would link this thread back to my friend. I think it's pretty well established that this forum is monitored by the powers that be in Seoul. How closely I don't know, but i suspect that the words "drug" and "lawyer" are probably flagged. Trinidad, if you think it is impossible to link what you write on here back to you, you're either incredibly naive, or have an unusually in-depth knowledge of computers, IP addresses and privacy protection.
But this isn't what this thread is about.
Thanks to those who have contributed useful information. I have now managed to contact the Incheon District PP Office. I can't visit my friend this week. Monday might be possible. I've gotten one lawyer rec by PM, but if anyone else can recommend another I'd still love to hear it. Either post on here or PM me. Thanks for the link OculisOrbis. It didn't seem to have specific lawyer recs, but it's good general information.
Thanks again for the help. |

Embassies/Consulates can and do provide a lot of help. What they cannot and do not do is rescue one from legal troubles for committing crimes overseas. |
