A friend of mine pulled a runner last weekend because he was unhappy with his school. He'd like to come back in the future but he doesn't know the problems he might face getting back in. Can someone tell me what those problems may be? I'm thinking he'll have to wait till his current visa is expired and he ran the risk of being blacklisted by immigration. He was in the sixth month of his contract. Any info will be of help.

yea man... i think you are right. i am not for sure but i dont beleive there are any other problems he would have to worry about. it is up to his school to report him to immi as having broken the contract. but just to be safe he should probably wait out the six months before trying to teach here again.

He will have to wait untill his E2 Visa is expired since the visa is attached to one job only unless you get a release. Blacklisted I don't think so, I've never heard of it happening. If he quit an EPIK job or other public school job, welcome to the world of teaching in Hagwons, he won't be hired for another public school job.

This is soooo true. My friend who did a runner from a terrible PS and tried to come back to teach at another PS. He was turned down repeatedly by EPIK, SMOE, GEPIK, etc. He even tried omitting the PS name from his resume, but somehow they found out he pulled a runner.

i've resigned from a public school and i got hired by SMOE. it all depends on if someone leaves on good terms or not (which, obviously, as a runner, he isn't on the greatest of terms now with his last school).

honestly, i don't understand why people do runners in the public school system if they're planning on coming back to korea. if it's a bad school, give your notice and if your school is mistreating you, contact the foreign teacher coordinator. if problems are severe enough, the coordinator will intervene.

What if you do 1 or 2 things. First, come back to a hagwon, then try to apply to a public school. If that doesn't work, then don't go through EPIK, GEPIK, or SMOE. Go through a recruiter that works with the public school. That way you can go to a face to face interview instead of hoping they will hire you abroad (without meeting you in person).

If the last works, then you could try a second year with EPIK after showing you worked at a public school. It might cancel things out. I have been asked repeatedly by recruiters why I worked for only 6 or 3 months with a school. However, the public schools don't care. People are probably getting filtered before it reaches the stage where the public schools would even notice there was a runner.

Terrible public school? I thought public schools were Utopian fantasy lands where all the teachers are paid 5 mil a month and pampered.

Laughing A dystopia, unfortunately. Having done both and having decent experiences at both, I'd sooner return to a hagwon than a public school.

As stated above, if you do a runner just wait out your E-2 period and apply again. If a new employer offers you a job, you'll get a visa. Just be sure to tell any recruiters you use that you did a runner before, they won't like finding it out from immigration.
