I just received my contract from the job I'm interested in. It all seems pretty great, 2.3 million won, 15 days paid vacation in addition to all holidays and winter/summer break, housing, flight, etc. But there's nothing on there about health insurance and the tax is at 3.3% Is that normal? Please advise if you know anything about this! Thanks so much. |

Health insurance and pension are mandatory. That means that it doesn't matter if it's in your contract, the school has to provide it. The 3.3% tax is high, but unless you worry about having a couple extra 10ks per month, don't worry and just get it back at the end via your tax refund. |

if you're not getting health insurance then you're not going to be getting any pension payments either.
You can't have 1 without the other.
3.3% is the independant contractor tax rate. |

I assume they are not getting you a visa or sponsoring you as an E-2? Are you an independent contractor? I'd like to know more about how to be one. |

Plan on hassles.
I've worked at a hagwon under this arrangement. Got an 11th month firing, requested that they set my books straight repeatedly . . . finally settled out-of-court.
You can do better.
Go to a bigger chain hagwon with a decent rep or the public schools. |

I didn't think you could claim back tax???? Im from the UK, does that matter?
How wrong is this:
My school is taxing me 3.8%, i don't pay pension but they take medical. HA HA scammers!!!!!!! What will happen if they get caught? Will they get caught? I'd probably get a slap for it too....
Why aren't there really strict laws against this stuff? Crazy town.
I can't get a pension refund anyway but what's this tax business? |

you can't get it refunded as a lump sum like the Americans but it will be accrued to your pension credits in the UK, from which you will get it when you retire 65.
Plus IF our respective Governments do come to some sort of agreement in the future apparently there is a decent chance we can claim it back. (somebody on here asked HMRC and copy/pasted the reply a while back). |

Huh thats good to know.
I really wish i had probably gone through my contract when i signed. There was NO mention of pension (ha not intended there) when i signed and i only realized after. Everyone is correct, it's mandatory to give you pension and medical and 3.3% is high but soooo many school seem to make this their rate. Why, i haven't a clue?
My situation is weird tho. Can i just ask others thoughts? So if my boss isnt doing anything with pension but i still pay medical, will i be covered for 50% medical or is the bugger pocketing it? Probably the latter....
If someone catches him at it, what would happen to me? Could i just smile and plead ignorance? |

How do hagwons get away with registering E-2 workers as 'independent contractors' instead of employees. Could someone explain this to me? |

The E2 visa law and administration is separate from the tax/pension/hi laws and their administrations. It is legal to be an E2 and an independent contractor if your contract is clear on the matter. Many big chain schools use this, it is allowed by the government. Someday it could change.
However, some employers try to be sneaky by using a contract that makes it seem that the worker is an employee, but then the employer registers him as an independent contractor. This is illegal.
Anyone in doubt should check their contract. |

That is news to me. According to immigration, if you are sponsored as an E-2, you cannot be independent. Did the rules change recently? |
