Okay so I was very nicely surprised with 'Shinjuku Incident' last night. It was no '3 colours' but it was nice to see Chan doing something different from the hollywood shite save the day good guy hero he usually does.
So I want to check out some martial arts (also Yakuza films as well if you know any) films that
A. I can get at the dvd rental store in Korea (please write the hanguel if possible) or buy at Yongsan pirate dvd market
B. That have a decent non cliched story (no getting vengence on wronged master, protecting the honour of the dojo, getting revenge for the village stuff please)
C. Is not Hollywood Van Damme type rubbish but still has great production
D. Is not hackneyed (as much as I like Drunken Master and 70's stuff like that, I kind of feel like, been there, seen that...)
E. Is just different from B, C, D type stuff, you know?

I've seen all the Bruce Lee and Kurasawa films and anything by Takeshi Kitano.
I would rather cut off and eat my own legs than watch Kung Fu Soccer films.
The 1st Ong Bak was ok. Nothing amazing but ok, the 2nd lame.
More reccomendations please.
You're dealing with a very hardcore cinephile here (just never really got into Martial Arts films so far) so no silly ones please. |

Forgot about that. Also, check out Saat Po Long or S.P.L. It had some pretty sweet action.
Just re-read your OP and I also found the Shinjuku Incident pleasantly surprising. But the last 25% of the film... really... the guy with the make-up... that whole ending kind of killed any buzz the first 75% sparked. |

When you say you've seen 'Ong Bak 2,' are you sure? A lot of people confuse it with 'Tom Yum Gung' (where he goes to Australia to rescue his kidnapped elephant), which is shite.
'Ong Bak 2: The Beginning' bears no relation to its prequel and is set way back in history. It's the 'story' of how the different martial art disciplines came together in Thailand. The plot is well dodgy but the fighting is fcuking quality. |
