that blind samurai one- not googling it. zoytoshi or something
red belt
throw down (more of a sport movie)
all for now. |
Zatoichi - a really cool movie^^ But lots of versions so just get the most modern one. (Not that the older ones are necessarily bad. I saw a black and white version that was good too).
I don't know if it comes under the OP's "Drunken Master" definition but Jet Li did a fun series "Once upon a time in China" that I always enjoyed. (This was before he got famous in the West and might be the kind of thing Mathew's World was referring to).
Not strictly what your looking for but there is that Brazilian Jujitsu movie "Red Belt" that was released last year(?). Formulaic story but has some really great authentic fight scenes. Just fast forward to the good bits^^
Don't know any quality Yakuza movies sorry, but I take it you've seen the Korean movie Old Boy? You'll never forget that one, a superb movie.
Actually can the OP recommend any good Yakuza films? I've never seen any and now you've got me interested.... |

| The Jet Li movie "Hero" is outstanding...cool plot, great action sequences, the use of different colors to tell the different stories, beautiful cinematography....wicked flick. |

| For samurai stuff, check out some Gosha Hideo if you can. Tenchu is probably his magnum opus. Yukio Mishima is in there doing his own hara-kiri (eerie no?). |

Older Jet Li stuff is pretty good. My favorites are Fist of Legend and Lord of the WuTang. Lord of the Wu Tang makes absolutely no sense, but it's pretty sweet.
Yuen Biao has some good movies:
Prodigal Son
Knockabout
Dreadnought
And of course, you can't go wrong with Gordon Liu:
Master Killer
Fists and Guts
Fist of the White Lotus
8 diagram pole fighter
For Japanese movies, go with Sonny Chiba. I guarantee you'll have the best theme song ever stuck in your head if you watch street fighter.

edit: also for yakuza movies, check out Takeshi Miike. He's more famous for movies like Happiness of the Katakuris, Audition and Visitor Q, but he makes something like 50 movies a year and he's done some decent Yakuza movies. I'd recommend Dead or Alive which is completely ridiculous but pretty sweet, Fudoh and Rainy Dog. |

| Not sure if this is the kind of martial arts film you're looking for, but Sword of Doom is a pretty cool film. |

I don't know if this is lame or not (I am unfamiliar with the genre) but I really enjoyed 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.
If it's not what you mean by martial arts movies....sorry! |

When you say you've seen 'Ong Bak 2,' are you sure? A lot of people confuse it with 'Tom Yum Gung' (where he goes to Australia to rescue his kidnapped elephant), which is shite.
'Ong Bak 2: The Beginning' bears no relation to its prequel and is set way back in history. It's the 'story' of how the different martial art disciplines came together in Thailand. The plot is well dodgy but the fighting is fcuking quality. |
Oh yeah, I know what I watched. I watch all the new stuff. All of it!
Also, If you look closely at Shaolin Soccer and Kung fu hustle you will notice that the supporting cast (mostly) are serious kung fu dudes who go way way back in the industry. They are just having a laugh that's all.
Has "Unleashed" been mentioned yet? Jet Li acts in this one! Badasssss! |

I'm loooking more specifically for non English language / hollywood produced martial arts films.
I saw the joint Japanese / Korean production of 'Rikidozan' last night.
not strictly martial arts but he was a famous Japanese (born korean but Japanese citizen) ex sumo wrestler turned 1st Japanese pro wrestling champion and the guy who bought pro wrestling in to the big picture in Japan.
A pretty decent film. I liked the way nothing was neatly tied up at the end and the fact that the theme of love wasn't dealt with in a clear cut moralistic way. Although I hated the way he treated his wife and was constantly shouting 'you a'hole, how can you do that to her you idiot... why are you acting like that you basterd?!' at the screen.
Very solid film. |
