If the school provides accommodation talk to your boss.
How good is your Korean? You may have misheard.
Man I am so wasted I can't open the door.
Yeah keep trying
Have you seen the new foreigner in the building?
Yeah she lives next door, she wakes me up each morning.
Man I hope that american chick doesn't wake me up this morning.
Why is there a dog in my apartment?
Dude that's not your apartment.
Couple of key words and it could mean anything.
peephole seems a good idea tho |

Actually, it probably is a bunch of men messing with you... or just talking and playing around.
HOWEVER, you should totally take caution, because you can never be sure.
If you really want, it can provide you some comfort, you can buy these locks that allow you to crack open the door to see who's outside while it's still secure. People outside can't get in no matter what and you still have control. I think they are easy to install, I have no idea, my home came stock with one. |

changing the locks or just getting another lock or moving are all good ideas. moving will be a horrible struggle with the boss, but definitely propose it to him. also, tell your boss to inform the security guard, maybe he can check the security cameras and pinpoint the resident (if any of the men do live there). i'd also think of getting a sign translated to korean to stick on my door, something to the effect of "do not disturb or the police will be called."
i'd also think about carrying a little bottle of hairspray (anything that'll sting in the eyes) and an alarm (the one with the pin you pull out is excellent). remember to check around you before you unlock and open your door as well, only open your door if you are alone in the hallway.
although korea may be a bit safer than back home, people don't realize the problems that many foreign women experience here. noticeably foreign women stand out and many korean men stereotype foreigners as loose, so there begins the problem! |

Might be true, I've nearly walked into the wrong apartment, sober and on many occasions. They all look the same here. I would probably put this down to drinking.
People who say get a weapon....a woman against three guys is only going to get it worse if she goes at them with a weapon. |

I don't know how big your dog is, but chances are as long as you have it, you should be okay. No one likes dealing with a loud animal. I'm going to go along with everyone else here though and say talk to your boss about the situation, just in case. |

I was sick one day and had left my door unlocked unknowingly. It just so happened that 100,000 was found missing from my wallet the next morning.
Koreans are curious and brave. This guy happened to be lucky on this night. I was dead asleep and didn't hear a thing. |

If she's attacked by 3 guys trying to enter the apartment, what do you suggest she use? |

I would take this pretty seriously espcecially with what's been happening in the community as far as the anti-foreigner attitude and attackers getting light sentences.
I had a guy grab my arm when I was letting myself into the gate of my building one time and ask me if he could come into to you use my bathroom. He had total crazy eyes. Had to shake his hand off my arm and get in the door fast.
As a result, I bought a personal alarm. I got it at Kosney in Myeongdong for about 15,000. I usually have it in my pocket when I walk off the main street and towards my apartment, haven't had to use it, but feel way safer with it.
So, definitely talk to your boss and get an alarm. I worry about a weapon. I think a lot of things can go wrong with that idea. A baseball bat sounds good. Stay away from knives. What if you lost the knife in a scuffle and it was used against you?
Take care. Hope they don't come back. |

Try to get some pepper spray (instead of a knife) and leave some treacle or similar around the handle. |

About two weeks ago I was sleeping, and I woke up at about 3am because I heard someone trying to get into my apartment by turning the doorknob. I only had one lock out of three locked on the door at the time - they kept shaking the door and I could hear about 3 male voices talking in Korean...I couldn't understand everything that they were saying but what I did get from the conversation was that they knew there was a foreigner living here and they thought I was American.
My dog started barking at the door and then they left. I was absolutely messing my pants. I'm a foreign woman living alone and I have no idea who these people were or how they know where I live (I am assuming they must live in the building as well).
Last night again I heard someone try to turn my doorknob. I don't know if this is the same person or some drunk neighbor who went to the wrong floor or something (there are more than a few boozehounds who live here).
I don't have a peephole and I'm obviously not going to open the door to check.
Is this worth even bringing up to my boss or the building security guard since I don't even know if it was the same person (the building security guard is a really really old adjesshi who probably can't do much anyways)?
What would you do? |
This is serious. You know what you witnessed and heard the first night, confirmed by your dog. Then someone comes by and tries your doorknob again. You should take this as the serious threat that it is, and prepare yourself. Don't listen to the people who try to complacently dismiss it as a drunkard, because drunkeness is the number one excuse used in most attacks here.
How long have you lived in this apartment?
I think the advice to inform your boss, and have them alert the security guard is a good one. In addition, I like the idea of the alarm and will get one myself. I would love to find some mace in this country.
Are there any other foreigners that live in your building or on your floor? I know many of us have anonymosity problems with each other, but this is a prime example of why we should stick together sometimes. I have a fellow NT next door, and have discussed with him in advance of what to listen for if there is a home invasion. I will scream to the top of my lungs and pound the walls. He can then deal with calling people, in additon to the police, because you just can't rely on them. One other NT recently called the police at 3 a.m., and they sent him a text message the next day.
I think weapons are fine if women know how to use them, like a gun. However, a knife would be dangerous in the case of being outnumbered by three men. It might work out just fine with one assailant, though, if you use the element of surprise.
You are so lucky you have a dog. I want one, but can't have one in my apartment. I lock down everything at night, but I only have one doorknob lock, and it is a bit spooky getting up to my 5th floor walk-up at night. There are floors that are empty on the way up, with bathrooms. The bottom floor has a restaurant, and the second floor a hagwon. Not the safest environment because there are tons of people who come through this building everyday.
I want some mace, an alarm, and I think I need to find a self-defense class, that is useful for women in attacks.
Can anyone recommend? |

I am not a paranoid person, by any stretch of the imagination, but we've heard one too many of these stories already..... |
Hate to sound alarmist - but this.
I've known 2 foriegn women living in Korea that have been assualted or stalked and peeped on by weirdo korean guys.
Forget telling the security 'guard ' (read alcy who watches tv all day for an easy life and couldn't harm a fly if his aged booze wrecked body wanted to....)
Tell your school that you want something done NOW! Exxegerate the story and appear really freaked out (I'm not kidding) make sure they tell the security guard and get him to be extra vigilant and maybe ask the local cops to came by at the time this usually happens just to see if anyone is around.
I might also get a co-worker to write in Korean someting like 'the security and police have been notified of someone playing with this door at night. If this continues we will take the upmost steps to prosecute the individuals involved.
To be really honest though if I were female, I'd get one of my male friends to come over and have some dinner and beers, just hang out and have a b'ball bat handy. When I heard the door being played around with and the whispering, I'd let him open the door and belt seven tons of s__t out of them. I'm not kidding.
Be careful when you walk home that some creepy looking person is not following you or giving you wierd looks. When you're out shopping etc in the local area make sure you don't keep seeing the same face around...
Don't want to make you paranoid, but like I said, I've known 2 girls who had crap happen, so.... better safe then sorry

Thanks for the tips and ideas everyone.
For those of you who said you got a personal alarm ~ where can I get one and what do they look like? I've never heard of these before and I would like to get one.
To answer the above question: I'm the only foreigner that lives in this building, so there isn't really anyone I can go to and unfortunately, it makes me stand out even more. There are not many foreigners in my area in general and I maybe see one or two a couple of times a week when I walk around town.
I'm definately going to talk to my boss, however, he tends to brush things off and not take me very seriously. I don't think he will be keen on a move but i'm going to push for a peephole and be extra cautious on my way in and out of the building from now on.
Thanks again for sharing your ideas and stories everyone, it helps a lot. |
