I pretty much posted this in response to the depressing relationship threads. Sounded to me like a few posters had some needs and were seeing to them all the wrong way. All sorts of unhappiness, mistrust, and insecurity ensued.

It's just good times, people! If you don't want to sleep around you shouldn't (this is to you, sarahsomething- notches are only fun if you enjoy the process). Ground rules should be honesty about intentions at the outset, and any disease is automatic retirement. If you later have a long term partner you had better be honest about your past. If everyone plays by the rules we can have some good clean fun.

DWAEGI, sucks you got burned. Sounds like someone wasn't honest with you. I say red card for her.

If you love promiscuity, you should get into porn. Hey- why not make money off of something you like to do.

I had a friend named Robert who couldn't get laid in high school and in college. He dropped out of college in his second year and literally became a porn star. After 14 years in the business, he is now a producer and director on the RealityKings series.

Wow! Good for him! I really mean that!

Aboxofchocolates.....I actually agree with your reason for making this thread.....those others were indeed depressing. That one dude who was confessing not only his sins but the Sins of All Men......Baby Wipes, his name is.....yay for honesty and all that, but damn.....super depressing.

And as for promiscuity.....not for all, I know. Certainly not for me. Which is fine. But your line about 'if we all played by the rules' is the important part, isn't it? If only we could be sure!

Cheers to a weird but cool thread!

Now that is a Cinderella story. Laughing

I gave up trying to sleep with people years ago. The elephant man got more than I do.

I found this thread just added to the depression. I do not rock.

Also, according to DSM-IV-TR, promiscuity is considered a trait of Borderline Personality Disorder.

Promiscuity can be good for some, but could be destructive for others.

Confirming that the DSM is not a manual of disorder but of deviance.

Surprised

Draz rocks! Draz has always rocked, especially when she was a cat with a gun on her head, but still now that she is two dancing old people. Sorry for the doldrums. Sad

Promiscuity... break down the word for a minute... Promise (root)... = committed truth... Skew= deviation...
I may be reaching here, but, a deviation of a promise (i.e.) breakdown of commitment... Swingers have been around forever and don't get me started about the whole theory of men spreading their seed bit... I totally agree... it all boils down to the don't ask don't tell policy that has been keeping families together for centuries.
Women are the ones writing the romance novels about affairs... an affair no less whether actualized or of the heart.
Disease???.. is like russian roulette or act responsibly.

The DSM-IV-TR is a manual for mental disorders.

Mental disorders will never be accurately classified, but I suppose some effort must be made. It's not exactly the periodic table of elements we're talking about when we speak of human behavior. This makes it easy to malign the study of abnormal behavior, though it is very important to keep this research going.

I doubt promiscuity can be linked to anything regarding a mental disorder, with any accuracy. Morality ideas are also part of the equation.

Are you familiar with the criticisms of it? Specifically, The Selling of the DSM and The Myth of Mental Illness.

The DSM is the product of an industry (not college, but industry) of charlatans misusing science.

It depends on whether or not the behavior is destructive, really. Like alcoholism. Getting drunk doesn't make you an alcoholic. Getting drunk because you can't cope with life sober, or getting drunk to the extent that it negatively affects your everyday life (interferes with your work, destroys your relationships) makes you an alcoholic. Same with promiscuity.

Sleeping around doesn't make you a headcase. Sleeping around because you desperately need some sort of validation that you get from the act, or sleeping around to the extent that you're destroying your relationships with others, isn't normal.

Three cheers to harmless promiscuity. I like this thread. aboxofchocolates, will you be my new bff?

According to the DSM, one aspect of Borderline Personality Disorder is the destructive behavior that comes when the person doesn't get the attention they want/deserve for themselves. So they tend to do destructive things either emotionally or physically to get that attention.
The manual includes sexual promiscuity along with attempted suicide as a way for a person afflicted with Borderline Personality Disorder to gain attention for themselves in addition to gaining the attention of the person they have affection for, through sympathy.

Unfortunately, these charlatans influence the psychiatric communities in both Canada and the US.

My question is- In the long run, what are those hoping to gain by being promiscious?
The short-term sexual gratification usually benefits that man's need for physical pleasure. How does it benefit the woman?
