Now that more and more people are getting it, including western teachers, I was just wondering how most people are describing how bad it was.
The reason I ask, is that 2 famous people in the news, Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN, and UFC Heavyweight Champ Brock Lesner, both had it and both said it was the sickest they have ever been in their lives. Both I would imagine would generally be regarded as healthy people in the low risk category(of dying, that is).
But I have been hearing of elementary and middle school students getting it and describing it as not that bad -in fact actually glad they had an excuse to stay home from school, like I felt when I was kid.
Obviously it is harder on some than others. But what kinds of comments are you hearing at the old water cooler? |

I had it but it was incredibly mild. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I was in pain for one night. It literally just snuck up on me and clobbered me over the head; I was feeling fine one minute and maybe 30 mins later, I definitely felt uneasy.
For about 6-8 hours, I was in bed, throbbing headache, fever and slightly dizzy.
the next morning, I felt about 90% better. Felt like I just woke up from a cold, not the flu. Got tested at the hospital and I tested positive for h1n1. But by then I was well on my way to recovery.
It lasted about 1 night for me. |

NPR podcast: Doctor specializing in the area said that less than a tenth of 1 percent of healthy people who get it will suffer severe pneumonia and die as a result. The rest of us will get a bad flu and get over it in a few days. |

Not entirely sure I had it, but my experience sounds similar to the poster above:

I finished hiking one day, felt terrific had a good hike, went out to lunch afterwards and then headed home. I was just sitting at home when all of a sudden I noticed my throat was sore. I had some water, thought nothing of it till it didnt go away. Then i started coughing. By the end of the night I felt like total crap; delightful headache, a lil' dizzy at times, had a nice cough, sore throat and nose was all plugged up. All that happened in a matter of 4 hours. Went to bed at 9pm and slept for 11 hours that night.
Next day wasn't that bad, whatever I had slowly progressed to my ears, but by the end of the week I was definitely on the mend. Didn't miss any school, but I'm sure I could of. |

by most accounts and analysis to date, the impact is much harsher for adults and that's why more adults are dying. |

You showed symptoms within 4 hours? I am just asking question and I am not a doctor( if Iwas I would not be in Korea) could it be possible that you caught it from someone the day before? Did you have someone go with you and you caught it from them? I hear signs could come from 1 to 4 days. My concern is I have Winter camp for two weeks then I go out of the country. I have 20 kids each week and I want to try to do everything to prevent it from happening. I already told my KT that if I see a child sick they go to the nurse. |

I just noticed my symptoms develop in that short time frame, from feeling perfectly health to completely down and out. You are definitely correct that H1N1 has an incubation time of 1 to 4 days, so I probably came in contact with it in the previous week. I was just pointing out that usually when I get sick, one morning its a small cough all day, next day its the cough with a little sore throat, then third day all that plus my nose starts to plug up..etc etc, a very sllooow, daily progression, a complete difference from the n "shock & awe" 4 hour attack on my body that I experienced. |

I think there's a relatively large number of people who believe that swine flu is just one of those bad flu's that goes around every few years, and that it's being used by unscrupulous people (i.e. politicians) as a scare tactic. This is, I would think, to some extent true (look at what the Ukraine are doing, and it's largely because they have an impending election), but there is also no doubt that it's a dangerous disease; I haven't had it, but a friend of mine who did before I came here told me that she was coughing up blood at one stage. All things considered though, it's not ebola. |

I read once that 50% of people who get seasonal flu show now symptons and its impossible to know how many times you've had it.
So between that 50% and the handful of people who die from flu....I'd assume it's a broad range of symptons. Probably similar with this pig flu. |

I had it. It was pretty mild. I was weak and had chills for a couple days, but the tamiflu made all the symptoms go away. I honestly thought it was just a cold. |

One of my high school students had it and she said it was the best week of her life.
Sufficient sleep, tons of food, computer games, television, and mom-care.
She said her symptoms were pretty mild. |

My friend got it. She said she just felt uncomfortable. She didn't feel "flu-ish" though. More like she had a cold. She didn't think nothing of it but brought it up during a routine check-up she had scheduled and the doctor tested her.
Anyway, I'm not too worried about it. I get it, but I think it's turned into hysteria blown way out of proportion. Think of all the people that die from the regular flu...
What I'm trying to say is that if I get it, I get it. I'm not going to avoid public encounters or anything, and I'm not going to wear a silly mask. (And on the note about masks, I want to yell at everyone I see that wears it around their mouth and not their nose that THE MASK ISN'T HELPING YOU IF YOU DON'T COVER BOTH!) |

I think my friend had it last week, he was in bed for a few days, the sickest he has been for years. Achey legs, cold sweats and such.
However when it set in he was drinking with me, and sitting right next to me for hours, sharing beers and the rest. I was totally convinced I was gonna get it and felt bizzarely tired one day last week. Then the feeling went away and I was fine. Id be surprised if I didnt have it to be honest, but I used to live in such squalor at university that I think my defences have been boosted to abnormal levels. I havent been sick in years and if I do get sick its usually cos Ive been doing something really stupid. |

I know what you mean, here. Ever since I did the whole move-out-at-18-and-have-to-decide-between-food-or-heat thing, where I lived off of instant ramen, beer and whatever I could eat on the days I worked, I haven't been "actually" sick. I get stuffy and will have a sore throat, but nothing REALLY to make me feel sick. |
