Any on here?? I need some help regards criminal background check, did you get one through the PSNI/Civil Service or disclosure Scotland? Would one from Disclosure Scotland be sufficient or would I need a more detailed one issued from the PSNI? Where did you get the required Apostille stamp and how much did it cost? I'm guessing getting the check notarised is a matter of taking it to your solicitor to sort.

I'm not from N.I., I'm from England. I don't know about specific checks on N.I., but I do know that the Disclosure Scotland one does just fine for people from the U.K. So that one will be fine for sure.

Ring the korean embassy in london (or ireland if they have one?)

They will be able to tell you, the woman that deals with visa phonecalls is absolute rubbish though.

Disclosure Scotland will be fine mate. Just select Basic Disclosure and do it online, costs like 28 quid I think.

In Scotland, all solicitors are public notaries not sure about NI mind you, but if you ring Disclosure Scotland I think they have a public notary on staff and might do it for you (never did for me though!). I just walked into a solicitor's in Glasgow and the boy did it there and then for 5 notes.

You get it Apostilled at the FCO in Milton Keynes, you can either post it to them (which takes a few weeks) or take it in person, if you take it in person they do it whilst you wait. Anybody can take it in on your behalf though, so if you know anyone who lives near MK, mail it to them, have them take it in and send it back to you. That's the way I went about it. Also, a few companies offer that service for a fee.

Thanks for the help folks, I was worried the disclosure wouldn't have been sufficient enough and to go through the whole rigmarole with the PSNI can take some time, as you can imagine. I'll check with disclosure tomorrow to get it notarised and post it off to MK for the stamp, google doesn't bring up too many solid results regarding a stamp in NI.

Okey Dokey here's how you do it.

Go to your police station and ask for a subject access form. It's a good idea to take a colour photocopy of the photo page of your passport and your European Health Insurance Card and get them to stamp and sign them while you're there. This will be enough ID for the check and you have a copy of your passport signed by the police to send to Korea. Not required but a police stamp does speed things up. Subject access costs �10 and takes about four weeks.

When you get your check back, take it (with your degree certificate) to your solicitors and get then to sign and stamp it. This will cost �10 for both.

After that you need to send both of them to the FCO Legalisation Office. All the info is here http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/services-we-deliver/legal-services/legalisation/ . This will cost you �62 for the two stamps and return by special delivery and will take one-four days (including time to post it back).

The total cost, including special delivery when sending everything out and back will be just short of �92 [�10 for the check + �5 special + �10 signatures + �62 for the stamps + �5 special to get it to them].

Found this thread while chasing my own documents, here's the low down, any help greatly appreciated.

I'm from Belfast, hold and travel on an Irish passport. Was told last year that an Access NI check was okay as a background check for the visa. Had a delay then for personal reasons, so while getting a new one today was told by a police officer that this may not be the right document I need.

After a few hours this is what I have:

- Both UK and Irish embassies say they don't know if it's okay (!)
- One recruiter suggested I needed a Disclosure Scotland. I called them and they said their basic disclosure is the same as what I have.
- Access NI today told me, contrary to what they told me last year, that I needed an ACRO check.
- ACRO said they didn't know what specific certificate I need (!)
- Have the subject access form that I think was mentioned in this thread many moons ago, but is this still the right thing to use?

I've gone from having everything set to having no idea so any help greatly appreciated.

I have an Irish passport and I have filed my visa documents twice with a PSNI check. I have never used a Disclosure Scotland one.

I find this confusing - (1) Northern Ireland (part of the U.K.) and (2) The Republic of Ireland.

No connection between Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland in terms of government, passports, currency, etc., correct?

And does Guinness come from Northern Ireland or The Republic of Ireland?
