Hot story in Canada right now.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601082&sid=a3mJWD1KiGxs
The Calgary Flames hockey team and their farm team jumped the queue and got the vaccine. The rest of the public had to line up for 4 hours. The farm team in BC got the vaccine at a time when it was mandated that only children and pregnant women could get it.
The public found out and demanded heads to roll. Apparently a senior government official got fired.
It's so funny that people are just starting to realize this now. Hockey players routinely have surgery far quicker than the average Joe. They have been queue jumping for years. Aren't doctors supposed to be moral and just people ? After all, they are the ones administering the shots.
Canada's Health System is far from "universal".
I am Canadian by the way. |

Since professional athletes travel such a great deal they should be vaccinated first.
A professional athlete can travel to 3 cities in 7 days. That's 3 different airports, hotels, restaurants, etc. |

They also fly first class (for the most part). They also pay a helluva lot of taxes.
Got to protect the money.

Don't believe the lies. This whole story is a big scam - the so-called flu shot "scarcity" you are hearing about in the media is artificial (there are enough vaccines for everyone, just many people don't want to take them because they are dangerous), and is deliberately created to manipulate the public into taking it. If people believe the vaccines are in high demand, then they are much more likely to line up to take them.
You can find open admissions of this by so-called "experts" discussing it at the Council on Foreign Relations. They also admit that they've done it to make people want to take regular flu shots before. Don't be fooled:

Are you saying that they didn't get priority in vaccination? That this story is false? |

No - to clarify: I was referring to the overall idea of vaccines being "scarce" (which is a lie), which is being fed us by the media, not the specific story in that article of hockey players getting theirs first or whatever (no reason to doubt that part). Regardless, that story too is misleading, and the point is that they're deliberately making an issue out of it to make us think the shots are some kind of a valuable commodity (so "scarce" that celebrities get priority), so that more people will line up to take them. This is just psychological manipulation. |

Well, in Canada, the chief public doctors are saying there is a shortage. And 2 senior health officials were fired in Alberta due to the scandal.
I could see that they may lie about it, though. |

No the point was they're a greater risk. Anyone who travels that extensively is a higher risk. Same thing with flight attendants, pilots and other airport staff. While a teacher might spread it around a school, or a bus driver might spread it around his route, an NHL player might spread it around 2 different countries. |

Higher risk does not mean that you are more likely to get it. It means you are more likely to get seriously ill if you get it. So far people who travel a lot or play sports have not be identified as groups who get hospitalized more often with H1N1. |

then I guess a lot of businessmen should be able to jump the queue as well? |
If a businessman could demonstrate that he had a required travel schedule that matched that of a professional athlete sure. As I said, I think airport staff should get it as well.
You can be at high risk of infection or death. High risk can have many meanings. The elderly might be at high risk of death but low risk of infection. The vaccine isn't 100%, so it has two purposes, hopefully to save people who are at high risk of death, but also to hopefully slow down the spread through people who are at high risk of infection. Doctors and nurses are not at high risk of death, but in many places they're being vaccinated first because they're at high risk of infection and infecting other people.
Let's not forget that the amount of vaccine the Flames got was extremely trivial compared to the over-all supply. 150 doses out of several hundred thousand doses available and it was given at a time when the vaccine was available to everyone. Since they got it at a time when the vaccine was available to anyone, the fact that they have such a varied travel schedule means they were more at risk than the average guy off the street both for contracting it and spreading it. If they were given the dose at a time when it was only available to the elderly and pregnant women, I could understand the complaining but that wasn't the case here. |

The issue is not the scarcity, but the prioritization. All of the people I know in Calgary, are at least somewhat bothered by the fact that these players (and families?) were given priority treatment above 'regular folk'. |

Yeah well, scarcity and prioritization go hand in hand. Rather than being "bothered" by it (in other words, falling for the psychological manipulation being played on you), realize that these sports stars were only given priority to make you believe these shots are the greatest thing since sliced bread, so and the rest of the public will stampede to get one. |

I lived there for the better part of 10 years and I'm not bothered by it. I'd only be bothered by it if they were given it at a time when it was available only for those with a high risk of death. Their queue jumping over joe schmoe who may do little more than go from home to starbucks to office and back again is pretty trivial considering they only received 150 out of something like 800,000 doses. |
