Lol. The "free market" is the reason that your retirement portfolio was halved in the last year. |
Nice counter-factual. |

Haha, in what way? Price controls? You do know that price controls never work, right? |
Yes, "Haha" indeed. I am not sure how they could be regulated while still allowing for innovation. Perhaps they could be taxed at a higher rate. Perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to be publicly traded companies. Obviously the current system does not work, so something needs to be done.
Unless you like the status quo, which obviously, millions of americans don't. Why do you think Obama got elected? |

Um it doesn't work because healthcare is so expensive.
I guess it was a conspiracy that Obama got elected? |

You're baffled? You see the campaign Mccain ran? How about that choice of Palin for VP? Didn't see that as a smalllllll factor? |

Why is health care expensive? Because drug companies keep creating life saving drugs that just happen to be expensive. The pesky buggers, we better put a stop to that right away by taxing the pants off of them so they can't do that any more! Problem solved! Chalk up another victory for the good guys.
Riddle me this Einstein. Why do computers keep getting 1000 times faster and can wash the cat and have 40 cup holders whilst dividing in price, yet medical tech doesn't do the same? What is the one major difference between those two sectors? If you get the answer right, I will give you a cookie. |

Are they creating life saving drugs?
Medical tech advances every year, so I am not sure what you are talking about.
Hey lets see how many pages we can make this thread! |

Why is that tech not cheap and available? Computers that Nasa could only dream about 10 years ago are touted around by 7 year olds today. Whilst hospitals routinely use machines that haven't changed that much in 40 years, despite newer better tech being available. |

In Kiwi land don't you have to pay registration which includes insurance for injury or medical claims if you are at fault in accident, but doesn't cover any damage to vehicles or property. This sounds a lot like socialism to me |

Yes, that's about right. There is a public liability insurance company. So, if you get injured the govt will pay you compensation, instead of sueing who ever injured you. It covers you if you ar einjured in the work place as well. It's probably a better system than the States even though the system will probably need to be bailed out.
And yes, it's highly socialist. Which is why I advocate private insurance in this area. Which is happening. |

Read up on the Sherman antitrust act. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Antitrust_Act
This worked out pretty well. People don't have to spend most of their income on oil and electricity as a result of this legislation which limited monopolies which gave industries the ability to eliminate competition and charge whatever they wanted for necessary resources.
Two easy things could be done to lower the price of medication. Shorten the time pharmaceutical companies have on their patents, and allow US residents to purchase medication that's too expensive in the US from foreign distributors.
Under the current system, there is no competition and therefore no incentive to charge competitive prices for life saving medicine.
A "free" market where the largest companies can control the entire supply of a product is hardly free. |

Both of these things are good ideas, but wouldn't both of them actually be reducing regulation, rather than increasing it? These suggestions seem to fall into line with the assertion that current high prices were caused by excessive governmental involvement in the first place, since they're suggesting the government stop doing something it's doing right now. |
